Default Pirates take Raynor in Rule 5 draft

    By Dejan Kovacevic | 9:05 a.m. Thursday

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Pirates selected outfielder John Raynor from the Marlins with their first pick, No. 2 overall, of Major League Baseball's Rule 5 draft this morning.

Raynor, who will turn 26 next month, batted .257 for Class AAA New Orleans last season, with six home runs, 24 doubles, two triples, 36 RBIs and 19 steals.

Raynor was the Marlins' ninth-round draft pick in 2006. In 2007, his first full professional season, he was named the South Atlantic League's MVP for batting .333 with 13 home runs, 57 RBIs and 54 steals with Greensboro. He was also named Florida's Minor League Player of the Year. His career average is .299, with 36 home runs over four seasons. In 2008, Baseball America named him the fastest baserunner in the Class AA Southern League.

    From Tim Williams...

"Raynor is fast enough to play center, but has a below average arm. He also has problems with strikeouts, with a 27 percent strikeout ratio in AAA last year. Raynor is a threat on the bases, with 142 steals in 1543 at-bats. He turns 26 in January.

The reason I'm surprised is because of what I noted last night in the notebook. The Pirates could have a crowded bench by June when Pedro Alvarez arrives, and especially if Jose Tabata arrives. It could be hard to hold on to a position player all season."

Is the penalty for retunring the player (in this case to the Marlins) if he can't stick on the ML roster just the $25,000, or is there other compensation? If it's just a total of $75,000 (25 k plus the 50 k for drafting him) , he might be worth a look. right? Besides, I think they need more competition to push Moss.

Actually the Pirates pay 50K to the Marlins and IF they do not keep him on the ML roster...the Marlins, if they want him back, have to pay the Pirates 25K.

    Moss = Poop
The only player in the NHL more overpaid than MAF is Jordan Staal

VERY doubtful, IMO. Clement is no sure thing at 1B, which means GFJ needs play there, so we need the OF's.

DY and Moss are completely different players. DY is much better than Moss in what will probably be their role: bench player. DY is great coming off of the bench, Moss isn't.

That's what I am talking about. Moss must earn a spot this year, no free pass like last year. My concern is that his throwing arm is poor, that is the one area that Moss is slightly above average. Hard to see where he fits. Glad it is not a pitcher, I was sick of seeing the 13 man staff and having to watch them play short a player for the last two years. He can pinch run at least and seems to have speed, I thought Tracy would be the pick because they need power bats. Hey Maybe we get lucky in the draft and the guy becomes the next Clemente from the rule 5 draft, you can always dream.

Raynor has some good upside and potential. PFIV mentioned that he's been a year per league guy in the minors but who knows how the Marlins minors were set up how Raynor might have been blocked etc... What I thought interesting and good was just looking at his numbers at every level. They are good numbers. His plate discipline isn't great and he got worse at the AA and AAA levels. His power is likely average at best potential wise but he has very good gap power. His gap numbers were on par with McCutchen's in the double and triple department in the minors.

I don't know anything about his defense, but the guy doesn't appear to be a project like Meek and Veal are last 2 Rule V guys, Raynor appears to be much more MLB ready and has the potential to be somewhat decent

Rule V's aren't ever much to get excited about They are crapshoots but... huntington has done a fairly decent job with his yearly selection. Meek has turned into a pretty decent pitcher who appears to be someone that's going to steadily improve. Veal has some legit nasty raw "stuff" as a pitcher. A left handed power pitcher with some nasty breaking pitches and an evolving changeup. Both guys had control issues and both seem to be improving n thise departments. Good chance that Veal and Meek could be valuable pieces to the MLB roster eventually. Getting that out of the Rule V is decent. That Meek is doing decent is 1 more positive we got out of the Rule V than we ever got when Littlefield was here.

So... we'll see what Raynor brings. So far, NH's track record in the Rule V seems to be solid so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt... for now

    Honestly....I mean....honestly.....

This pick makes no **** sense at all. Seriously....none. None at all.
Nobody will convince me otherwise. ****....back in the day I was excited about friggin Emil Brown. Yeah...exactly. EB was a better prospect than this guy IMO.

    ....waste of ****ing time.
