Default some factors on defense including Aaron Smith missing

    1. The one common thread in 2007 and 2009 is that aaron smith was hurt.

Do you all think that really affect woodley's ability to rush the passer cause maybe of the double teams that smith gets. Thus putting woodley on a TE or a RB. It seemed like this year he got the RT more and sometimes won it and sometimes did not.

    2. Someone mentioned something about Timmons's having 2 bad ankles judging from his lack of lateral mobility and his inability to stop quickly that might have been more of a factor than we have seen

    3. Obviously we miss TP, and Bryant McFadden and the later even more than any of us really expected. It would be interesting to chart how many plays McFadden gave up as compared with Gay this year.

    4. I still say we miss Foote cause he enabled Timmons to only play passing downs thus giving him more rest and having foot fresh for obvious running downs.

    5. Travis Kirshe (sp) also out.

    What else?

Woodley has 9 sacks on the season. 2.5 shy of the 11.5 he had last year. through 2 less games, Woodley has 2 less tackles than last season as well.

The thing with last season's pass rush and this years is most likely 2 fold.

    1. No Troy. Troy is disguised heavily on almost every down and it creates confusion for opposing offenses cause they don't know if he's coming, taking the underneath route or jumping back into deeper safety coverage . This causes confusion with the linemen and some hesitation andleads to mixed up protect calls and QB reads. We don't have a safety with the skillset to do what Troy does so we rely more heavily on linebacker pressure without Troy in there with the safeties generally playing back in normal spots.

    2. **** Poor coverage. We'd have to look at the tape from last year and even then it'll be tough because Troy was in there, but I'm willing to bet that a nice number of sacks and such were coverage sacks by the Steelers. We aren't getting those this year

Good points Kip -- how many games did we lose in 07 with TP out?

Player get injured and get old, it is the coaches responsibility to have a guy ready to take his place. Not an easy task with the cap and all that.
Forget about Smith being the missing piece, at his age injuries will come more often and last longer. I don't see him on the team after next season and if does remain, not the impact player we would like him to still be.
