    Default Question of the day

How much do the Pirates have committed (guaranteed money) on ML payroll after 2011?

    Not me.

I care about seeing productive, good players on the roster that are both young and have good ceilings and potential to improve yearly. Cut the dead weight (Capps) and move on and see if you can find a way to improve through whatever means.

Payroll is meaningless with the Pirates. Making good personnel decisions is all that matters. Payroll is something that will be attacked and dealt with when the time comes to appropriately pay players that deserve it, what they are worth, not overpaying the Matt Capps' so some fans can be happy above payroll numbers

At this point in the (off) season how do you think the projected 2010 team stacks up to the opening day 2009 team?

I think the answer in terms of players actually on the team might be $0, but they're committed to guaranteed buyouts if they don't pick up the options on Maholm and Doumit. I think it's somewhere just north of $1 million in total.

Give that man a cigar........ Just thought that was pretty interesting.

As for the buyouts for Maholm and Doumit you can bet they will be gone before the Pirates have to exercise their options.

I saw something where the total is in fact $0. I'm sure that will work itself out.

You know I'm gonna agree with Kipper here. For now, I want to see good players with high ceilings and a system in place that turns out that type of player. Could they have afforded to keep Capps, yeah sure, but I'm much less concerned with losing a Capps, then others coming up. When the time comes that the likes of McCutchen and others need to be paid, they better step up and do so. Pedro will be here 6 years and then he'll be gone if he turns into the star they think he will. Keep spending money the way they are and fill the holes on this hapless major league team they have. That will have to do for now. Is it the perfect situation? No, but it is what it is!

I honestly couldnt care less. Payroll does not equate into anything when talking about the pirates. our payroll was over 50 mil a few years ago... what did that get us? Matt ****in Stairs... thats what. Payroll numbers are irrelevant to the Pirates.

    Bingo....

Granted - it does take money to field a team, but I want to see them put the right players on the field (and, in the WHOLE organization) regardless of how much they cost.

Unfortunately, all the majority of fans care about is a mythical, dollar figure that somehow applies to making a winner.

Ask the Mets and some of those other teams how that $100m worked out for them?
