Default Pirates looking at Kelly Johnson

Ok, not necessarily a strong rumor but this can get us out of the Matt Capps discussion rut...

"MLBTR isn't 100% reliable, but the possibility is interesting enough that I think it's worth discussing anyway.

Johnson would've been easier to fit onto the roster before the Iwamura pickup, but even now, he'd be a smart addition at the right price. He's a career .264/.346/.430 hitter who can play second, third, or corner outfield, and he'd immediately become the best player on our bench. Even better, as a 28-year-old, he's young enough that he could plausibly be a future building block if he acquits himself well in 2010. He struggled in 2009, but the main source of those struggles appears to have been a large drop in his BABIP relative to career norms (.313 career, .249 in 2009), making him a likely bet to rebound. His 2010 CHONE forecast is a .262/.338/.428 line.

If Johnson were to sign, the players most likely to be threatened by his presence on the roster would seem to be Vazquez and Young. I could certainly live with an upgrade on either of those two."

Johnson made almost 3 mil last year he will undoubtly want a raise from that figure. Do you honestly think for one second the Pirates will lay that kind of money out especially for a backup?

Here is what Pat Lackey at whygavs has to say about Bobby Crosby and I think it can apply here with Johnson as well...

"1. The Pirates are trying to spend money this offseason because of their extremely low payroll.
    2. The Pirates are trying to do so in a fashion that does not block any of their young MLB players or soon-to-be-ready prospects.

    3. Ronny Cedeno is not very good and having someone else start at shortstop would probably be a good thing.
    4. Bobby Crosby is a free agent shortstop on whom money could be spent without blocking anyone (unless he's signed to a multi-year deal, which would be insane on a Littlefieldian scale) and by doing so the Pirates could limit Cedeno's playing time.

So, yeah maybe they would pony up for Johnson...

They wouldn't pay Capps and he's not blocking anyone and his season wasn't any worse than Kelly Johnson's. So no, I don't see them paying Johnson that much money.

If the Pirates can get Johnson for their price (league minimum) it's possible if not then no way.

Johnson last year had a BA of 224....an OPS of 692 and a OPS+ of 83.

Now these are stats the of a player who stinks and has no value.

Johnson made $2.8 million last year. There's no way the Pirates pay in that ballpark to a bench player nor should they... he'd be a bench player. Bad enough they paid Virgil Vasquez $2 million per year.

The chances however of Kelly Johnson having a rebound year compared to Capps is much greater. Johnson just had an off year, Capps has had an off year + with underwhelming closer K rates and pitches but more importantly 2 injuries to overcome that's he hasn't come close to shaking off. If you look at the 2 of them and for example say the same amount of money... Kelly Johnson is the far better risk of being able to perhaps turn for something somewhat useful at the trade deadline than Fatt Capps. He is a lefty ... problem with Johnson is we have a log jam currently in the middle infield and to turn Kelly Johnson, he'd have to become the starter. I don't even know or think Johnson would take an offer here without being guaranteed the starters role

Johnson was still better on offense than Capps was on the hill. 5.8 era is the stuff of great closers.

****, then that would make Capps better than Johnson.

    We did get screwed...
