The Pirates have signed left-handed pitcher Javier Lopez to a one-year contract.

Lopez, 32, spent the past four seasons with the Red Sox, making 172 appearances with a 3.30 ERA. He spent most of 2009 with Class AAA Pawtucket, posting a 3.18 ERA in 38 appearances. Overall, in 343 appearances, he has a 4.62 ERA over seven seasons.

Neal Huntington's statement: "Javier has proven to be a capable major league reliever who has the ability to attack both left- and right-handed hitters. He will provide a solid option for John Russell in 2010."

Lopez made $1.35 million last year, but the terms of this contract are not yet known.

The 40-man roster is at 39.

"UPDATE 6:03 p.m.: The contract is for $775,000. He can made an additional $550,000 in performance bonuses, related to appearances.

    > On his 9.26 ERA in 11-plus innings for Boston in 2009: "When you become a lefty specialist -- and I've been labeled that -- you don't accrue many innings. But I gave up five runs in a third of an inning to Tampa, and that takes a long time to work that ERA back down."

    > On the Pirates not wanting anyone to be a lefty specialist: "That was yet another reason why Pittsburgh seemed like a great place. I knew the opportunity was there to pitch not only to multiple batters, but maybe multiple innings. I was able to show that in Pawtucket this year, going three innings twice. I'm a sinker-ball pitcher, and I know they've got a good defense in Pittsburgh, so I try to stay efficient and get quick outs."

Yawn......bad thing he's an average reliever and has been pretty much a LOOGY. Also it looks like he's pretty much a flyball pitcher. Good thing he was only signed for 1 year and he is probably the 3rd best pitcher in the pen.

Not an overwhelming signing in any sense, yet I am optimistic. Might provide some decent innings.

So your job on the board is to criticize every possible move the team makes in a knee jerk way?

What are they supposed to do, sign the next Sandy Koufax?

The Pirates yesterday signed free-agent reliever Javier Lopez to a one-year, $775,000 contract, thus raising the number of left-handed relievers on their 40-man roster ... from zero to one.

Last time I looked I wasn't employed by the PPT. Kipper did you hire me without my knowledge? If you did I want a raise.

Next thing I believe I was fair and balanced I gave the good and bad of the signing.

Why is it knee jerk? Look at this guys stats, his history and tell me what you don't agree with.

Lastly the way the Pirates spend they couldn't sign Sandy Day O’Connor!

give this kid a chance, he was willing to come here most FA laugh at the pirates. He will be every bit as good as Sean Burnet was last year.
