    Default Pirates to Sign Dotel?

Pirates Extend Offer To Octavio Dotel
By Luke Adams [December 23, 2009 at 1:46pm CST]

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made Octavio Dotel an offer to be their closer, according to Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports. Calcaterra writes that the offer is worth about $3MM, plus incentives for games finished.

Dotel has posted solid numbers over the past two seasons in a setup role for the White Sox, but has not been asked to close since 2007, when he saved 11 games for the Royals. Over his career, Dotel has recorded 83 saves in various stints as the closer in Houston, Oakland, and Kansas City.

I would rather have Dotel than Capps.

    As would I.

And should this deal go down, what does that do for everyone's griping about the 'cheap Pirates not getting anything for Capps' and 'being afraid to spend' etc etc garbage that's permeated the threads over the last week?

it will do nothing, people will just complain that we should have gotten a guy like him in a trade for capps and then still signed some other FA as well, its a no win

I would rather have Hanerhan and Meek close and use the 3 mill to sign Duscher but i will be ok with Dotel.

    Agreed.

I don't see Dotel closing, but I do like it adding another arm to the pen and also adding some competition whereas if a guy slips in the closer role, another can be put in.

Actually, this would give us 3 quality righty arms in the pen. If we can get some lefties our pen may not be a total suckfest.

I'll be curious to see what we give Dotel, so I'll hold back my excitement for now.

Far better option that Capps. I HATE Dotel's age. Perhaps an argument could be made for Fatt Capps going into the future based on the 10-11 years age difference but Dotel is better than Capps everywhere.

Dotel has a K/9 above 10 which is like 3-4 higher than Capps. Dotel has 3 good pitches he mixes well - a fastball, cutter, slider. Capps has a ****ty slider and a no movement fastball.

Dotel has rebounded from TJ surgery (in which i'll really only take a look at his last 2 years of work... Capps hasn't shown that he's rebounded from injuries the past 2 seasons.

Dotel works to get in shape. Capps reports overweight and out of shape.

Over the past 2 seasons, Dotel as a setup man has a better ERA, H/9, K/9, WHIPs are similar. Dotel naturally has the higher BB/9 since he's been a setup man in which cases those are guys that enter with guys on base and often will walk guys more to force DP's

Still curious what we're paying for Dotel. He made $6 million last season

Why you disrepsecting the left handed Javier Lopez?

    Lopez
    Meek
    Hanrahan
    Dotel
    Hart (possibly)
Jackson (unfortunately but likely long relief)

    Another lefty would be nice

I would to..... while here goes another chapter in my continuing effort to throw the Bucs under the bus. Dotel made 6 million last year while having a pretty good year. The Pirates think he will come and play for them, a last place team, for 1/2 that amount. Good luck on that one! I don't believe for one minute that this report holds any water. The Pirates interest part might be true but when you throw in a reduction of salary by 1/2 thats when the story crumbles.

    I don't know if it's a wash.

Dotel has recovered from TJ surgery pretty well the past 2 seasons. His stats and K rates have shown that. He's up there in age but his last 2 seasons have been good, his conditioning isn't poor etc...

With Capps you have a guy seeking a raise off of a season that was awful, injuries the [past 2 seasons in which he's not overcome, **** poor conditioning, overweight (both things that management doesn't like), fallen stats, movement on pitches and no indication that he'll get better quickly.

If given the choice of either on a 1 year deal for the same amount, Dotel is the safer more reliable bet... that Fatt Capps just got $3.5 million IMO rose the price of Dotel. Like PFIV said, it's tough to imagine Dotel taking a 50% reduction in salary to play for the Pirates. It's gonna cost more to bring him in. I'd take the gamble, personally. I want nothing to do with Jack Taschner who sucks

kipper....Dotel will also most assuredly want a multi year deal. Strike 2 against the Pirates.
