    Kovalchuk: the Penguins interested?

    By HOCKEY30.com

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, the Penguins might be interested in Ilya Kovalchuk by the trade deadline.

Given that the Thrashers seem to be an impasse in negotiations with the Russian general manager Ray Shero might be tempted to dispose of many hopes and choices high draft pick for Kovalchuk.

Obviously, the Penguins would go on to look only at the end of the season and the playoffs. The team has not enough space on their payroll to sign Kovalchuk long term.

Free agent on 1 July 2010, the Russian star could help the Penguins to go for a second consecutive Stanley Cup.

Acquiring a player as a loan knowing full well they can keep after the season is a gamble. Shero seems to try.

Will be entitled to a team of 3 of the best players on the planet? Crosby-Malkin-Kovalchuk could represent one of the best combinations of history on the powerplay.

    Ouch!

I would not do that move in a million years. We are hot now, we do not need a rental player. I would be more willing to trade Gonch for some picks, and/or a decent player that is already signed for a couple years... when I say decent, I'm sayin like $2mill/year range

It would be fun to think about but I don't see it happening. Also I think at some point maybe we should add a few draft picks to the system.

There is no way a deal like this happens. One, they can't afford the salary and cap hit as the team is currently structured. Two, you'd have to give up way too much to make it happen.

If they were gonna do this move, last year was the time when I was expecting it and personally begging and praying for it to happen. Not this year. To be honest I like this team a lot. The only change I'd make is shipping Mike Yeo out of town

I had thought about that but it would make ZERO sense for the Thrashers. The only way they trade Kovalchuk is to replenish their system, get younger etc... I can't see them trading Kovalchuk for a 35 year old rental

Kovalchuk will be dealt, but not to Pittsburgh. The price would be too high, for a player they had no shot at resigning!

I'm still not 100% sold on the Pens blueline! A nasty, stay-at-home defenseman is on my wish list! ...Anton Volchenkov anyone? ....Ottawa would have to tank big-time first!

I wouldn't mind a guy like volchenkov, he can at least move the puck, but I want nothing to do with a gritty stay at home defenseman who is a liability with the puck on his stick which seems to be true for a good number of them. With the north/west, aggressive forecheck style of Byslma, our defense has to be able to move the puck well. It's the Red Wings and Sharks model, so if you want a guy like that, it has to be someone that can move the puck well

We finally got rid of Hal Gill. I for one don't want to watch other teams forwards blow around our statuesque defenseman again!

But our defense has been leaky lately, MAF's been getting run alot, etc. That's gotta change someway, somehow!

Yep. Not to mention the fact the cap hit from Kovalchuk would put us over the cap, since his salary is about double Gonch's, if I'm not mistaken.

I like your suggestion on Anton Volchenkov. When you say blow around our defensemen, are you referring to Stafford blowing around Goligoski last night for the tying goal?

Gill played with Scuderi as our two best defensemen last year in the playoffs. Not sure why it's get on Gill day.

What is the problem that Atlanta can't sign Kova anyway? Seems like they are finally getting somewhere as a team. They just broke or what?

I would guess that Kovy is sick of playing for a perrenial loser
The only player in the NHL more overpaid than MAF is Jordan Staal

From what I heard, he's not sure Atlanta is going to be around. Their franchise situation currently doesn't lend itself to a long term deal.
