Title should be 'if you are in the don't trade players boat', as spending a little money doesn't mean you were upset they traded our old vets for prospects.

Very good article. I wish the 'average fan' would read this but their brains would explode by the second paragraph.

Tim at Bucco Fans always throws out some well written and well thought out blogs/articles. The guy is really up to snuff with "numbers" in general which you could find out going through all of his blog pieces.

This was more of an article to diffuse those that are still lefty (most likely at the PBC blog and official site board) complaining that we should've kept the 08 roster together.. With a season and a little more in the books, some numbers and facts are finally out there to present whether that idea would've been "good" or "bad".... needless to say... like tim pointed out, it would;ve been bad based on what it would've done to our minor leagues. The MLB team wouldn't have been any better unless you think a 75 win season is a great accomplishment worthy of 80 million plus... If I remember correctly from the Trib days... Mr Smartmonies and buccs72 (not to forget BH) were a few of the guys that were on the "keep the 2008 team together bandwagon". Glad to know they aren't making that decision.

I have always favored the way NH and FC are doing things to rebuild the Pirates. When you build a house, you don't build the roof first, you start with the foundation, and in the case of our Buccos that would be the minor league system. a strong, solid minor league is critical for winning baseball in PNC Park for years to come, and one day, the the unimformed fan will understand and appreciate what NH and FC started in 2007.

It can be tough to see your favorite players get traded. I never DID get that Bay jersey I'd been wanting...
And if they had ****-farted around about it, I'd be very unhappy, but they did it right, they got rid of everybody that could fetch a nice return.
Except of course: Doumit, Maholm and Duke (and one who fetched none: Capps).

The '08 team and its predecessors never came close to a .500 season, let alone sniffed the post season, it had to go. Plain and simple. I loved Jack and Freddy and the other players that gave their all for the rotten teams that have been trotted out over the past decade, but like everybody else, I'm tired of losing, tired of banality.

Looking at the current price tag of continuing that futility only reinforces my confidence that the PBC is moving in the right direction. At least now there are actual good prospects in the minors to look forward to and an interesting young team on the ML field.

Another losing season looms but Rome wasn't built in a day.
