    Default Walker?

Top prospect Pedro Alvarez is projected to play third base for Class AAA Indianapolis early next season, which would leave another first-round pick, Neil Walker, without a position. Walker has a background at catcher and is athletic enough to try the outfield or second base, but management has yet to approach him about any kind of switch. A trade seems highly likely, but management sounds reluctant to trade Walker until he has an offensive breakout.

I've been wondering about this too. It's pretty obvious that he is pretty much blocked at 3B now, what with Alvarez AND LaRoche ahead of him. That is unless you want to project Alvarez to 1B and LaRoche to 2B. But in the meantime where does he play? Especially if as stated they want to wait until he has an "offensive breakout". You don't get that by sitting on the bench so if Walker is the one to switch positions, what are they waiting for?

I was reading where D.K. doesn't think Walker has a future with the Pirates beyond spring training.

I'd start him in Indianapolis in the outfield. That would seem to be his best shot.

Below average. If he was going to last as a catcher it would be because of his bat, which hasn't been what was expected.

I still think Walker was a homer pick. Just like bringing back Sean Casey to play 1B.

He can get his AB's DHing at AAA. If he shows an improved stroke the Pirates will find a spot for him.

True, but they might as well try him in the outfield and other spots and see if he can handle them.

Casey might have been a homer move but.... Casey, Randa, & Burnitz (2006)... That is what spending money in Free Agency gets you. $18.5 million dollars completely wasted in 3 players that didn't do a **** thing to help this team out..

Walker was drafted by DL in the KM administration because he could be scouted for about a quarter tank of gas.

This has to be one of the most unintelligent, over used punch lines ever attributed to the Pirates organization.

Yes, spending money in FA is always a terrible decision and can never and will never improve or help any team...EVER.

How? Even more importantly... how can a guy that's done nothing for the past few months but ***** about how money is spent and throw out tin foil hat conspiracy theories even attempt to tell someone that their own conspiracy is "unintelligent". You sound like a hypocrite.

The way Littlefield operated the draft, it's as possible as it isn't that Walker was drafted because they had easier and cheaper access to him. We all know the scouting staff under Littlefield was small by MLB standards. We all know that Littlefield wanted little to do with paying anything over slot in the draft so he could use those saved funds to dumpster dive in Free Agency to make Benny happy . Walker was likely drafted for a lot of the wrong reason (local boy, cheap access, signability) .

By your thinking Kipper, we shouldn't draft high bonus first round picks anymore either due to their failure rates. We have had plenty of failures in that department as well. Not only the initial bonuses paid out to some of our first rounders, but the money spent over the years trying to polish turds.

Did anyone on here actually think that Casey or Randa were going to do anything at all? Burnitz had back to back solid seasons with some pop before coming here. How could anyone tell he was going to mail it in after that?

Please name one legit free agent that the Pirates have signed and brought in here with high expectations by them and by the fans that crapped the bed. They have constantly dumpster dived and ended up with trash. What a surprise.
