Default Bixler traded to Tribe! Woo Hoo!

For minor leaguer Jesus Brito, also an infielder who hit well in rookie and A ball last year. Don't know his upside, but it has to be better than Bixler.

Well this is...interesting. I can't believe someone wanted to take Bixler on their 40 man.

Brito's Dominican League numbers don't look very encouraging, but he had a very good debut stateside in the short season leagues, so maybe there's something there.

I really don't even know what to say right now.

They had to open a space on the 40-man roster anyway. Will have to do it again in order to sign Dotel. (So who's next??) Bixler wasn't playing up here what with the off-season infield signings and the fact that they were able to get anything for him is a positive move, IMO.

John Sickels had Brito as an honorable mention (Grade C) in his Indians top 20 list.

Baseball America had him as the #14 prospect in the Arizona League (rookie level) last year.

Old for the level he was playing at, but scouting types seem to like him well enough.

I can't see him being any worse than Bixler. I am sure NH liked what he saw of this kid when he he was with cleveland and thinks he is a better fit with us.

Well.... there's one of those 40 man spots cleared up for Donnelly. If Dotel gets signed, another will be going.

Just glad that Bixler is finally gone. I read what Jnn said about what we got in return but in all honesty, it's Brian Bixler, so the return can't be that great. Like was said elsewhere... addition by subtraction

Bixler will get packaged by the Indians and sent to (some team) and become a star!

Pirates trade Bixler for prospect, sign Donnelly
    Monday, January 18, 2010
    By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Pirates today traded Brian Bixler to the Cleveland Indians for Jesus Brito in an exchange of minor league infielders, clearing space on the full 40-man roster for the signing of free-agent reliever Brendan Donnelly. The latter was made official this afternoon after he passed his physical.

Donnelly's financial terms are not available yet, but it will be a one-year contract with base pay of $1.35 million and performance bonuses that could double that.

Brito, 22, finished fifth among all minor league players with a .353 combined average between rookie ball and Class A. In 224 at-bats, he had 19 doubles, 10 triple, three home runs and 43 RBIs in 60 games. He spent the previous three years in his native Dominican Republic.

Brito does not have to be added to the 40-man.

I saw someone make what seems to be a pretty decent comparison for Brito former Pirate-wise. Remember when they took Freddy Garcia in the Rule 5 draft? He was coming off a very similar age 21 season in the NYPL at the time. Unlike Garcia, Brito should have a chance to develop in the minors the next couple years, so maybe he can turn out OK. About as good as you can expect for a guy like Bixler.
