Default Pirates OF Brandon Jones from Braves

    By Dejan Kovacevic | 3:56 p.m. Tuesday

The Pirates have claimed outfielder Brandon Jones off waivers from Atlanta, according to MLB.com's Braves reporter.

Jones, 26, batted .257 in 51 games over the past three seasons for the Braves, with one home run, 22 RBIs, 11 doubles and a steal. With Class AAA Gwinnett last season, he batted .281 with seven home runs and 57 RBIs.

In 2007, Jones, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound left-handed batter, was ranked No. 4 among Atlanta's prospects by Baseball America.

    This is Jones' official page.

This is his minor league page.

And these are his full professional statistics.

Someone will have to come off the 40-man roster for this move to be official, as the roster is full.

UPDATE 4:23 p.m.: The Pirates confirm the claim on Jones.

The team added this in its statement: "The addition of Jones officially puts the Pirates' 40-man roster at 40 players while the club awaits confirmation between Major League Baseball and the Players Association on one of Pittsburgh's recently announced free agent signings."

That could be Ryan Church or Brendan Donnelly.

Either way, someone else still has to come off the roster. Two someones, actually, in looking ahead to Octavio Dotel.

He isn't anything to get excited about that's for sure. I wonder if he has options left? If he does than this is nothing more than filler. He can probably fill in in the bigs for a short time, otherwise he is just playing AAA.

Just looked quickly. Jones is a lefty bat. Probably signals that Moss is done. not that jones is any better. Jones is just a guy that's been overhyped with no power.

    eh..

how about some definite news on Dotel, NH?

I'm inclined to say that he doesn't have any options left. Jnn probably knows better

"5:29 p.m.: Just spoke with Neal Huntington about Jones, and this was what he had to say: "We think Brandon is an intriguing guy, someone who's shown good upside in the past. We took a shot that he might benefit from a change of scenery."

Huntington also confirmed the above scenario of the 40-man roster not actually being at 41. MLB and the union are inundated with contracts coming their way today, and the Pirates have not received confirmation on one of those two players mentioned above, Church of Donnelly. But Huntington stressed that there is no issue at all with either of those players' contracts.

All of this should get cleared up tomorrow.

Oh, and Jones does have an option left.

6:09 p.m.: Still more on this strange scenario ...

The Pirates move to get to 40, for real, could come as early as tomorrow morning, and it could involve another trade similar to the Brian Bixler exchange with Cleveland two days ago that returned prospect Jesus Brito. Huntington is known to be engaged in such talks, and a trade, obviously, would be his preference over designating a player for assignment and risking a loss on waivers. (No major league players are part of these talks, by the way.)

Which might explain how Jones entered this equation: The Pirates choose second in the waiver order, as only Washington finished with a worse record in 2009, putting the Nationals first in the order. It could be that they added Jones with the hope of including him in a trade, perhaps a two-for-one or three-for-one that would address their roster issues and add talent.

Such a deal might be the only trading course to clear the way for yet another transaction, the pending agreement with free-agent reliever Octavio Dotel. That could come later this week."

Interesting. When I first saw it I figured it was the end of Brandon Moss since Jones is a LH OF bat with an option. The possibility that Dejan presents is interesting as well. The part about "no major league players" but still using it to open 2 40 man spots limits the number of players who could be involved. Neil Walker jumps to mind, but there are other options.

All definitely intriguing for sure (thanks for the DK stuff Tocchet) .

So... are they looking to package a bunch of players for a prospect? A MLB player and also have a spot cleared for Dotel?

NH doesn't seem to be the sort of person to wait a long time for players to prove themselves. Moss is a good example of the way he works. NH took a chance on him in 2008, gave him about 2/3s of a season and one spring training to show he can handle the job, and is more than willing to replace him when it becomes obvious he's not able to handle the job. All business and no misty-eyed "He's a good guy", "This will be his breakout year" or other twaddle. If Moss isn't traded in the next two months he better see the handwriting is on the wall-there are a lot of other players out there to take his place if he doesn't hit better.

It seems to me, at least, that he's doing something and thinking...that was more than DL did
