Default What to do about Casey?

I'm thinking they will franchise/transition tag him. That is what I would do.

He's getting toward the underproductive/overpaid point of his career.

Still a valuable contributor, but you have to wonder if the value is there.

That is why you tag him I believe. He don't want it, understandably, but would likely be the best value for the team, unless he is willing to sign a FO favorable contract.

Short term fix for a long term problem.

If he gets tagged, he gets paid in (I think) the top 5 in the league in his position. I don't know if that's going to be more than what he's currently getting, but again - when does paying a guy who's performance is on the decline begin to lose value?

I believe you are right, average of the top 5, which IMO will be over paying him, but another team would likely do it anyways, so like I say, short term fix.

Then again you have to weigh what you will get from him if tagged? He is almost done. Not too wise to tag a player on his last leg. What would be nice is if he felt the tag would come and try for a 2 year deal, that wouldn't be much. I guess cap numbers play into to it too.

I picked sign him. They just don't have any desirable options behind him. They need to draft on the D-Line.

Very true IMO... But are we gonna stay with the same scheme long term? There's been talk of change, and if LeBeau retires after next season (or fairly soon thereafter) do we want him on the hook?... Yea, we don't have the personnel to change it up at this point, but it's gotta start somewhere... Going into the uncapped year might be the time to do so, and if so, how long is Hampton a viable option? And then, who do you tag for a season?

You mean the 3-4 vs. the 4-3? That's an interesting point. This just my opinion, but I don't see a full blown change,if anything I could see them with a hybrid of the two,in other words using both schemes in certain situations. Just strickly a guess on my end.

Yea, that's what I was referring to. My bad... IMO, the problem with going "hybrid" or a flat-out change is the personnel... We gotta play what we can, based on the players on the squad.

Agreed and I thought they would tag him but I heard something where he would hold out if they tag him, he wants a contract. From his point of view that makes sense because he might not be able to get more than a 1 year deal after next year. I wonder if they could just extend him for maybe 2 years. I think the problem there is they would want to reduce his rate for obvious reasons and there will surely be problems with that. I don't know, very interested to see how this one pans out in particular because there isn't much in the way of a contingency plan.

Doesn't matter what any of us would do....

Art says the FA signing line starts behind Casey.

That means signing him is their top priority.

    So be it.

I am fine with that because of the circumstances, no one to replace him, they basically have no choice.

With no clear-cut secondary option...and with there not being a salary cap to worry about this coming season...you TAG him. Draft a replacement...then let him walk.

I opted for tag but a short contract to facilitate a draft-to-replace maneuvre would be an option.
