    Default The Wildcat Formation

I know the steelers will never use it but is it a viable formation for teams with a speedy QB in the NFL or is just a fad. I haven't seen any videos of it being ran last year so i was wondering about its success.

To me it is good for a team that has speed but doesn't have an elite QB. It doesn't really makes sense for the Steelers, Colts, Saints, New England, etc to use it because when your QB is the best player on the team then you want it to go to him pretty much every snap. That said the Steelers probably would do well to practice it for those times when Ben is not playing. Dixon could be great in that set. I think it is a fad as well but it is just like anything else, it is going to get used as long as it works. Once defenses get better schemes for handling it, you will see less of it.

I look at the wildcat as being the admission that a team has a ****e QB. Obvious case: The Clowns. Clownfeet Anderson is fairly awful and Barbie Queen looks like roadkill. That only leaves the fallback position: Wildcat.

It was Dixon's ability to run that got me thinking about it in the first place but we'll probably never see him play as long as Ben is healthy. Maybe Arians will run it in the pre season.

I seriously don't think Arians is creative enough to develop a play that gadgety. It would be good to show the potential to go gadget (if only as a bluff) but would seem unlikely.
