    Default Steelers Hire Olsavsky

    From the PG, Gary Dulac....

The Steelers have hired one of their former players, linebacker Jerry Olsavsky, to be their defensive assistant, replacing Lou Spanos.

Olsavsky, 42, played with the Steelers from 1989 to 1997 after being drafted on the 10th round from Pitt. He played one more season with the Baltimore Ravens before retiring.

A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Olsavsaky had been the linebackers coach at Youngstown State University the past seven years.

Olsavsky and former Steelers linebacker Earl Holmes were the only known candidates who were interviewed for the position by Coach Mike Tomlin.

I like Olsavasky. He was good example of a guy that didn't possess much natural skill and ability who worked hard to achieve alot and was really good at a lot of things that guys with natural ability ignore BUT would make them better. It's nice having a coach that can recognize those things

I agree 100%. It seems like it is always the so so players of talent that make the best coaches. I'm not saying Jerry O wasn't good, he is everything you described. Had the smarts and desire to get past his lack of physical gifts that others seem to be born with.

I hope this turns out well.

I agree with the hire as well.

Might be wrong here, but it's great stuff.

Loved Jerry O as a player. Tough as nails and never gave up on a play. I have no idea if he can coach, but if a few of his intangibles rub off on guys, that is great. That said, the LBs do not lack for passion or effort - even a guy like Timmons, who drives me crazy, seems to have a good motor.
