    Default Minor League Breakout players

I look for the following guys to break out this year
    Hunter Strickland
    Ramon Cabrera
    Diego Moreno
    Eric Avila

These guys are all lower level or little discussed guys. I didn't include players like ZVR on the list as he is already highly touted.

I don't know anything about Avila - what do you see that you like?

That's one thing I don't like about the New Pirates; there are so many interesting players in the minor leagues it's hard to keep track of them all!

Top be honest, I don't really forsee a breakout player at least not a breakout player under my terms which is a guy not projected to being much having a really good season.

I think a good number of players are simply going to improve and get better. Tim Alderson is one of those guys. Jeff Locke is another. 2 guys that had down years, I can see them rebounding and making big improvements... yup, I'll say it - Danny Moskos. He';s going back to his natural position as a reliever. His velocity should go back up, his control should improve, K/9 numbers go back up... Might see Moskos in a Pirates uniform before the season ends

Unless they are uber prospects, I don't get too excited until they reach AA and dominate there, especially pitchers. We should start seeing some of NH's guys reach there this year.

Starling Marte fit that description last year. Several DSL and VSL guys should graduate to the states this year. You never know who is going to break out.

Very true but man, predictiing a breakout player from that group would be very hard. Hell, do we even know who from the DSL and VSL are getting promotions ?

I don’t pick breakout players but here are a few off the radar guys to watch this year.

    From the DSL team

    1) Eric Avila….good catch Lup, he will definitely get a good look this year.

    2) Audury Acevedo…I’ve been trumpeting this guy for a couple of years since I first saw him in ST in 2008. He hasn’t done much but he still is only 19 …..count on him getting another look.

    3) Fraylin Campos, Porfirio Lopez and Martires Cadet are a few pitchers that look promising. Martires however has played only 1 year in the DSL so they might want to keep him there another year.

    From the VSL

    1) Michaelangelo Trinidad just killed that league last year. He should have been in the states but I guess coming off a season long injury management didn’t know what they had. He’s a bit old so you can count on him taking the boat ride.

    2) Francisco Aponte, Jorge Bishop, David Pinto are some other position players to watch.

    3) some pitchers are Oscar Verdugo, Devis Goatache…(yes that’s his name) and David Ruiz

    From the GCL

    1) Benny Gonzalez...played better than expected last year

    2) Gift Ngoepe...very talented but still raw

    3) Walter Gourley...draft pick last year...good skill set

    4) Edwin Romam....struggled last year but was very young

    5) Wes Freeman....King Kong body hasn't done much

    6) Joey Schoenfield....draft pick last year, good potential

    7) 2 guys I really really like …..Rogelios Norris and Jhonatan Ramos

One other guy who doesn’t get much love is SC pitcher Nelson Pereira……I’d also put him in the really really like category!

Finally there’s one guy who’s been in the organization for a couple of years now but hasn’t done much at all. I can’t wait to watch this guy this year …..Jarek Cunningham.

It seems as if Acevedo may have been rushed hopefully he isn't set back too much. I also like Exicardo Cayonez and Jesus Vasquez. I agree about B. Gonzalez and Cunningham.
What are your thoughts on Ramon Cabrera?

Cayonez and Vasquez are real young and have played only 1 year in their respective leagues so they could stay where they are.

Cabrera...was brought to ST last year and then returned to his VSL team. He then was brought back to the states after he got off to a hot start in the VSL. He's a young age appropiate guy who had a good 1st season in the states. I could see him going to SC this year. I remember seeing him at ST because he was hard to miss.....he's a little on the short side 5-7.

Cabrera has a strong arm and from what I've heard is sound defensively. He seems to swing a good bat as well.
Cayonez and Vasquez are real young, but had real strong debuts for young players.

I think the Pirates would like to get as many Latin position prospects to the states this year as possible due to the lack of same in the lower minors....not so much with pitchers because of the glut. But as always only if they are ready.

As far as guys off the radar who haven't been mentioned yet (and thanks to PFV for putting that great list together), I'd add SS Brock Holt.

Trinidad you'd think needs fast tracked. He's what? 21-22 years old. That's pretty old, especially compared to someone like Marte who got fast tracked last year but was 20.
