An NHL source confirmed with Sporting News that the Atlanta Thrashers have traded star forward Ilya Kovalchuk to the New Jersey Devils.

In return, the Thashers received defenseman Johnny Oduya, right winger Niclas Bergfors, prospect Patrice Cormier and a first-round draft pick, several media sources report.
The deal comes on a the heels of a statement by the Thrashers that Kovalchuk turned down offers that included a deal worth more than $100 million and one that would have made him hockey's highest-paid player. The story was first reported by USA Today's Kevin Allen.

Kovalchuk, 26, has been the hottest name in trade rumors since it was disclosed the Thrashers would not be able to meet his demands for a new contract. Thrashers officials announced this week they would open bidding for Kovalchuk, and as many as a dozen teams were reported to be in the mix.

    Further details are coming.

"You're getting one of the best goal-scorers in the league for many years," Devils forward Patrik Elias told Rich Chere of NJ.com. "He can win a lot of hockey games. He's a threat every time he's on the ice."

GM Don Waddell thus acquired in this deal a return similar to what he got two years ago when traded Marian Hossa to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In Kovalchuk, the Devils get the potent scorer they need to bolster their just-average offense. In 594 games in his seventh season, Kovalchuk has 328 goals and 278 assists. He was the first overall selection in 2001. He led the NHL in goals in 2007-08 with 52 goals and in 2003-04 tied for the lead with 41.

A seven-year NHL veteran, Kovalchuk was selected first overall by the Thrashers in the 2001 NHL Draft. In 594 career NHL games with Atlanta, he has amassed 328 goals and 278 points.

Kovalchuk scored a career-high 52 goals with the Thrashers in 2007-08 and was co-recipient of the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2003-04 with a league-leading 41 goals.

Waddell defended the team's decision to trade Kovalchuk earlier Thursday. Click here for details.

I heard some *** cheeks slapping, some screams and moans and then would out that it was the sound of Don Waddell getting bent over in ****ed in the *** big time.

They didn't get **** for Kovalchuk.

Between Kovalchuk and Hossa Atlanta has received.

    Colby Armstrong
    Erik Christensen
    Johnny Oduya
    Niklas Bergfors
    Angelo Esposito
    Patrice Cormier

a possible low 1st round draft pick
A possible low 1st round draft

Don Waddell has just gotten a bunch of nothing for 2 of the better players in the NHL

What do you expect? They were both unrestricted free agents. If Hossa and Kovalchuk had 2 or 3 years left on their contracts.... Atlanta would have got more.

Atl;anta could've gotten more. they clearly went the quantity route both times in those trades. they could've recieved more quality in return. Problem with Atlanta is that I don't believe they've drafted well behind this firesale and Waddell isn't exactly a stud in Free Agency. at some point with one of these 2 he should've tried to get quality. kovalchuk is the one.

Hell, Waddell could've settled for nothing but prospects if he wanted quantity, instead of some of the useless guys like Oduya and Armstrong and Christensen that can be found for cheap in Free Agency

Lou didnt give up as much as one would have expected. But its not bad return either. It was probably as good as it was going to get since Im sure most teams were going to try to get rid of bad contracts (aka Bruins and Ryder). Oduya is a good defenseman, Bergfors is a solid rookie, Cormier is a good prospect notwithstanding his suspension.

Then again its not gonna matter Waddell should be ousted soon enough.
