    Angry Dermontti Dawson Denied

Class of 2010 finalists trimmed to seven
Posted: February 6th, 2010 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Emmitt Smith, Hall of Fame class of 2010, Jerry Rice, John Randle, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Rickey Jackson, Russ Grimm

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ó Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, John Randle, Jerry Rice, and Emmitt Smith are the five modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010. They are joined by seniors committee finalists Dick LeBeau and Floyd Little. A final, secret ballot was taken that will determine how many of those seven are elected. The class will have a minimum of four.

The NFL Network began live coverage of the announcement at 5 p.m. ET and NFL.com will stream the announcement beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The final list was pared down from a group of 15 modern-era nominees by the 44-member Hall of Fame selection committee that met this morning at the Super Bowl XLIV media center. The selectors first pared that list from 15 to 10. In addition to the final five, the others that were part of the final 10 were Dermontti Dawson, Richard Dent, Cortez Kennedy, Andre Reed, and Shannon Sharpe. Each finalist had to receive a minimum positive vote of 80 percent to be elected.

Rice and Smith, widely considered automatic entrants, were both eligible for the first time. Rice, who holds every major receiving record, was chosen first-team All-Pro 10 times, and was a 13-time Pro Bowler during 20 NFL seasons. Smith was a four-time first-team All-Pro and voted to eight Pro Bowls during a 13-year career that he finished as the NFLís all-time leading rusher.

A quote from an article on NFL.COM:

To no one's surprise, Jackson, like Taylor, [HIGH-LIGHT]will have a bronze bust[/HIGH-LIGHT].

[HIGH-LIGHT]Dawson should have one as well[/HIGH-LIGHT]. He was one of the most dominant centers the game has ever seen. [HIGH-LIGHT]The argument for him centered around how well he could move and block.[/HIGH-LIGHT] Clearly enough voters agreed with that notion to get him to the final 10, but he went no further.

Dawson continues to wait for Hall
February, 6, 2010 Feb 67:43PM ET By James Walker

One of the top centers of all-time will continue to play the waiting game.

Thirteen-year Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Dermontti Dawson, who made [HIGH-LIGHT]seven consecutive Pro Bowls from 1992-98[/HIGH-LIGHT], was once again passed over for the Hall of Fame. This was the sixth consecutive time he failed to make it to Canton since becoming eligible in 2005.

Dawson made the cut from 15 to 10 finalists this year. But Dawson wasn't part of the five inductees that included Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Russ Grimm, John Randle and Rickey Jackson. Senior nominees Dick LeBeau and Floyd Little also are part of the 2010 class.

This year was perhaps the closest Dawson came to making the Hall of Fame. He also was a finalist in 2008 and a semifinalist in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009.

There is an impressive backlog of players currently not in the Hall of Fame. In addition to Dawson, strong candidates such as Cris Carter, Cortez Kennedy, Richard Dent, Andre Reed, Charles Haley, Tim Brown and Roger Craig were all rejected this year alone.

Several more impressive candidates such as Marshall Faulk, Deion Sanders, Jonathan Ogden and Jerome Bettis also will be eligible very soon. That will further congest the Hall of Fame voting process, which doesn't help Dawson's candidacy

More importantly than the pro-bowls Dawson was selected to be an all-pro 6 times. The HOF is a farce and joke at this point in time as far as I'm concerned.

It's becoming the Hall of the Very Good...

What Emmit and Rice meant to their position, Dawson meant to his and without having a Super Bowl squad around him. He was the biggest factor our offense was the best running team.

Well said, the backlash seems to be from too many Steelers already being in. I remember reading that Dawson was rated not only the best center during his time but also the best football player in the league, by fellow players. It is a total joke he is not in. Put him in another uniform with less players in the Hall and he makes it first time.

Dawson was a great Center. But he was a Center. Not a high profile position in the voter's minds. And he was a great Center without a ring. Therefore he'll need to wait a while. Would Webby be HOF without the rings?

I have no doubt that the lack of the ring hurt Dawson. It shouldn't have but you know it did. Web would have made it without the rings. There are players with rings that haven't made it too.

Position shouldn't matter one bit, great is great, whether it be quarterback or center. The place in Canton isn't named the Hall of Fame for skill positions. It's there to recognize the greatest players in NFL history regardless of position. It's a sham until Dermontti Dawson is inducted into the HOF. Russ Grimm over Dawson? Really? Grimm was a great guard for the Skins and probably deserves to be in the HOF, but not before Dawson.

This news definately sucks...DD is one of my favorite all-time Steelers! He played with integrity, class, and above-all, he was a "game changer!" Correct me if I'm wrong, but DD revolutionized the "Center" position. He was among the first (if not the first) center to incorporate "pulling" into the center position...which made him an invaluable asset on traps, sweeps, and counters. The guy was a beast!!!...not to mention a leader in the locker room. He will, certainly, get his chance to wear the yellow jacket sooner then later! However, we cant get too greedy...unless they open up ANOTHER wing in Canton to honor our beloved Steelers!!!
