    Hanrahan ailing, Vazquez rehabbing
    By Chuck Finder | 9:46 a.m.

BRADENTON, Fla. -- While players were undergoing physical examinations this morning around the corner from the clubhouse, the Pirates general manager Neal Huntington announced that reliever Joel Hanrahan is suffering from a right, throwing elbow injury that could remove him from his expected, key bullpen role anywhere from two weeks to a month, and utility infielder Ramon Vazquez had previously undisclosed arthroscopic surgery on his rate knee in November.

Vazquez is expected to rehabilitate from his microfracture procedure by opening day, Huntington added.

Hanrahan's ailment, a flexor pronator strain in the elbow, prevents him from doing anything with his upper body. He is scheduled to see team Dr. Patrick DeMeo today, have an MRI Tuesday and visit to famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in his Pensacola, Fla., office next Thursday.

Huntington added that the other surgically repaired and rehabilitating Pirates pitchers on the roster were progressing on schedule: Jose Ascanio, who also will visit Andrews next Thursday (shoulder -- early June); Tyler Yates (second Tommy John surgery -- July); Craig Hansen (nerve malady -- throws off a mound March 10 to determine course); Neal Cotts (Tommy John surgery -- mid-June); Jimmy Barthmaier (Tommy John surgery -- mid-May).

    Stay tuned I guess...

UPDATE: From Jen Langosch, it's a flexor-pronator strain in his pitching elbow and while he's going to see Dr. James Andrews next week, there's been no indication of structural damage so far. So long as that doesn't change, we can hold out hope that Hammer will avoid serious injury.

Rob Biertempfel had a quote from Huntington that said he's shut down indefinitely and they won't know the timetable until later this week. Not sure where Finder got two weeks to a month. Said it could be May 1, could be later.

Wonder how he strained the flexor muscles, on the palm side, of the forearm...

    Ditto.

What's next? Cutch in a car wreck? Tabata marries a 60 year old and moves to Madagascar? Alvarez becomes a Buddhist Monk?

It wouldn't surprise me. I always thought that when bonds stopped playing his curse would be lifted. Maybe he needs to officially "retire" or perhaps "die" to get the curse lifted.. I don't know...

    Update from Finder:
UPDATE 9:58 a.m.: Comments moments ago from Hanrahan, who said surgery isn't a consideration right now:
"It's something that I kind of battled with in August and Septemeber," months where he permitted opponents to hit a .162 average and crafted a 0.42 ERA. "I felt good coming into mini-camp [a month ago]; probably cranked it up a little too much there. I tried to psyche myself out and say it wasn't anything. I took about a week off after mini-camp. Didn't feel great. I felt like I could throw, but I wouldn't do any help to myself or the team. Got it checked out. Just got a little setback."
"Nothing structural. It's like tendinitis -- a little strain in the forearm."
"Hopefully, it won't be anything that lingers around all year. Get it taken care of now. If I miss two weeks to a month, it's better than missing the whole year. This is the first time I've really dealt with any elbow [problem]. I mean, I've never had surgery on anything. That's not even in the question right now -- that's a positive. I just kind of want to make sure it's gone and be healthy for the rest of the year."
Too bad that Vazquez' injury will leave him available for the opener. It would be a good excuse to have him off the roster for a coupla months...

Maybe we don't want a healthy Hanrahan?
