    Default Pirates Sign Dominican Outfielder

The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to terms with 17-year-old Dominican outfielder Willy Garcia on a $280,000 bonus, according to several sources. Playing for the Patriotas del Centro of the Dominican Prospect League, Garcia hit .217 in 23 at bats. Garcia's projectable frame (6-foot-3, 177 pounds) makes him an intriguing prospect.

Garcia is the 14th prospect to sign from the DPL, according to the league.

It's a pretty meaningless number since it was just 5-23. I don't know much about the Dominican Prospect League, but it looks like they play once a week from late January-March. Seems like more a talent showcase than a competitive league.

Willy Garcia has become the latest D.P.L. player to go Pro, The Pirates signed Garcia to a $280,000 dollar contract this past week. Playing with Los Patriotas del Centro for Christian "El Niche" Batista for 3 months and coming off a great All-Star game showcase Garcia has shown much improvement in all tools. His Arm, Running ability, and Power potential made him an interesting asset to many organizations. Garcia has a long way to go before he is considered a true 5 tool player but he has enough to be a solid everyday guy in MLB. His projectable frame and tools handed him a well deserved opportunity to develop his skills as a professional ball player. We congratulate Willy Garcia and wish him the best in his quest to be a MLB player.

My take as well. These players aren't really scouted based on stats in leagues down there since the leagues competitively and such aren't much to go by. These guys are scouted more on their tools and abilities...

It is why IMO that more than anywhere, scouting and talent evaluation in Latin America is crucial. While more of the uneducated fans will clamor to the "highest priced" guys that get hyped by Sports Illustrated and other media forms... it's the good scouts that are finding the next big name players for cheap while your Sano's are becoming big money busts

For $280,000 ... why not? If the tools are there, you get the chance to start developing and molding this kid from a pretty early age at a low cost

aside from liking the age and projected frame, i really like that they did some work down there, it makes me start to think we have hard working honest scouts out there, who realize their work is never done.

Either that or they are just snagging guys with 2 arms, 2 legs and a pulse and figuring that quantity down there has to net them some players of worth

This guy must be a decent prospect.....$280.000 is a pretty significant bonus especially for the Pirates.

Nice low risk, high possible reward signing. Good move.

Now that you mention it and I look t that number again, it is a pretty large sum for a player down there. That's the most they've spent on a player down there since Cayonez and Carvajal) who got $350K (Carvajal) and $400K. I wanna say it's more than what Barrios got a couple years ago.

I read that their bonus budget was about $2 million. Does that seem really really low to anyone else? It seems like it's such an important part of developing a farm system, why be so cheap? I know that is the amount a lot of teams spend, and a lot spend even less, it just seems like we should be spending more on prospects there than Ryan Church costs.
