Default Ovechkin not stunned by U.S.' win over Canada

Ovechkin not stunned by U.S.' win over CanadaMonday, 02.22.2010 / 11:47 PM / All-Access Vancouver By Brian Compton - NHL.com Staff Writer 7
Share Many people around North America and across the world may have been shocked by the United States' 5-3 win against Canada at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver on Sunday.

But Russian superstar Alex Ovechkin isn't among those who were.

"I was not surprised," Ovechkin told NHL.com on Monday. "I knew it would be a pretty hard game for Canada. They have probably the same style of game. They know each other well because everybody plays in the NHL and everybody knows each other."

By losing to the U.S., Canada must go through Russia in order to advance in the tournament -- that is, of course, assuming the Canadians get past Germany on Tuesday. Ovechkin, the star forward and captain of the Washington Capitals, is excited about what would certainly be a must-see matchup on Wednesday.

"It's going to be a pretty big game for both countries, for both teams," Ovechkin said of the potential showdown with the Canadians. "But it's going to be a pretty fun game, too."

Barring any changes, Ovechkin will once again skate on a line with Caps teammate Alexander Semin and Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin. Ovechkin and Malkin were placed together for the first time at the start of Russia's 4-2 win against the Czech Republic on Sunday.

"A great moment for me (and) for him and for our team, too," Ovechkin said of skating alongside Malkin. "But I think it was the most important thing that we win the game. We take one extra day off for us. We just take more time and space to work out and be ready for next game."

With another day off before Russia returns to game action, Ovechkin could spend some time enjoying the sights of Vancouver. But he won't.

"It's fun," Ovechkin said of the atmosphere, (but) I'm just trying to concentrate on my game. I don't concentrate on pictures, signing stuff just be a normal guy with my team."

If Ovie thinks about running anyone over he is going to get leveled by Morrow or Weber, 2 boys in the western conference is doesn't see that often. Keep your fingers crossed that my prediction comes true.

Nah... it'll look like the Russian D is getting exposed because Russia has forwards like Ovechkin, Morozov, Afinogenov, Federov etc.... that don't like to backcheck and are horrendous defensive forwards.

I actually feel bad for Russia's defense.

Ovechkin has gotta be "stunned" from the game tonight.... Currently 7-2 Canada, so it looks like little Ove is going home without getting a chance to play for a medal.... Boo hoo....

I love it...I wish Malkin could have come away with something, but I am happy Ovie bombed out...again! Maybe this will be the beginning of the end for the Caps this season too!

I was wrong. The whole team got exposed.

Ovy got a taste of his own medicine and didn't like it.

The only Russian I feel for is Datsyuk. He's a keeper.
