Default Steelers game of tag will end today

Steelers game of tag will end today
    Thursday, February 25, 2010
    By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Casey Hampton waits in Texas for what he hopes is word today about a new contract while agents for Ryan Clark and Jeff Reed steam toward Indianapolis as contract talks with the Steelers and their trio of priorities gain momentum.

The deadline for the Steelers to use either of their franchise or transition tags is 4 p.m. today. They plan to use their franchise tag on Hampton if a new contract is not negotiated and likely will use the transition on Reed.

"We're still working, man," Hampton said from home Wednesday. "I'm just hoping a deal will get done."

Hampton, Clark and Reed can become unrestricted free agents March 5 if they do not sign a contract before then.

The team can restrict two of those players somewhat in free agency by using the two tags. The franchise tag on Hampton would guarantee him $7 million in salary for the 2010 season and virtually eliminate their Pro Bowl nose tackle going anywhere. A transition tag on Reed would guarantee him a salary of $2,629,000, but the kicker would still be able to sign elsewhere with the Steelers only maintaining their right to match such a deal and keep him.

The team is not expected to use a tag on Clark, the free safety who would command $6,455,000 as a franchise player or $6,011,000 as a transition. Each team can use only two tags -- one franchise and one transition, or two transitions.

Joel Turner, Clark's agent, plans to meet with Steelers negotiator Omar Khan at 5 p.m. Friday in Indianapolis, where the NFL Scouting Combine starts today.

"In negotiating on Ryan's behalf, for what we are trying to do, it is not something that is unpalatable for this organization and certainly not in an uncapped year," Turner said. "Unlike other people who said they would give trouble if they were franchised, you never heard those words out of us.."

Turner said he is trying to negotiate a "fair" contract for Clark.

"We're trying to do something good for his family and the organization, and it's something they can do if they want to do it. It's as simple as that. We're not asking for something exorbitant, and it wouldn't be a cap-breaker if there was one. Ryan wants to be back, and it's nothing we can't work out."

Reed's agent, Don Henderson, plans to arrive in Indianapolis at noon today, and it's likely he too will talk with Khan.

A couple of years' deal for Hampton would be best for club and fans. If he wants more, then he's probably going to be disappointed.

As to Clark's status and agent, " "It is not something that is unpalatable for this organization and certainly not in an uncapped year," Turner said" sounds like an agent who sees the cash train a-comin'. It implies that he doesn't know this organisationribly well. Don't go yammering on about an uncapped year, because the Steelers will not pay over the odds for any reason.

I wish they would franchise Hampton and draft his replacement anywhere in the 1st three rounds this year. Franchise Reed and that's it. With the potential of no football in 2011 giving Hampton a multiyear deal doesn't seem prudent unless its for way less than market value.

If he's tagged for next year and there is no football in 2011 he'll be 35 by the time he's playing football again and we know how seriously Hampton takes off season conditioning. The chances of him coming back in condition to play football at age 35 are slim and none and slim left town.

Franchise Hampton and be done, as the players are so fond of saying, "its only business".

One would have to believe that if there is no football in 2011 and a lockout happens...all contracts become null and void.

It will be interesting to find out the details of Casey's contract. Hopefully it is something like...3-4 mil signing bonus and guaranteed 7-8 mil next year.(that would be the 11 mil done)...then 5 or 6 mil the next and 4 or 5 mil the last.

I highly doubt he sees the 3rd year of this deal, lockout or not. That 3rd year is just for show, IMO.

    $21.3M/3 yrs, $11M guaranteed/$6.5M SB.
O.K. now we see the numbers. $6.5 mil signing bonus of $11 mil guaranteed, leaves $14.8 mil for 3 years service....which he will never see 3 years IMO........equals less than 5 mil a season?

I'm guessing the signer is what was importatnt to him...I hope he don't just screw us now. I could easily see next season being his last.
