Default Steelers apparently sign Casey Hampton

    http://kdka.com/sports/Casey.Hampton.St ... 19203.html

A source says nose tackle Casey Hampton has agreed to a three year, $21 million contract to stay with the team with $11 million of the contract guaranteed.

Today is the deadline for the Steelers to use either of their franchise or transition tags.

Not a fan of this deal at all.

3 yrs doesn't mean anything to me. If they were going to franchise him and assure that he's here for at least 1 more year, I expect he probably makes $7-9 mill. Not sure what that avg no would have been (I'm sure you stat gurus will know). So we spent an extra couple of mill. Still no guarantee that he isn't cut or traded in year 2 or 3. First, it depends on how he performs and second it depends on who is replacement will be.

As far as the weight watchers thing, some of that weight is what makes him so tough in the middle, so be careful what you wish for.

The key to the deal is the upfront money. Ham gets a little more than if they would have franchised him. The Steelers had him locked in...they gave aliitle more. Seems fair to me

They still need to draft his replacement, sooner rather than later.

I'm not a fan of the deal; however, it does allow more leverage in dealing with Reed and Clark. Hampton'd deal isn't cost prohibitive had they franchised him it would have cost the Steelers 7 million and a good, but disgruntled NT.

Now they have options in the draft and with their dealings with Reed and Clark. They may now have the freedom to allow Clark to test the FA waters and if there isn't a robust market for his services resign him for less than even the transition tag.

They could also transition Clark at about 2.8 million, not horrible.

So, the Hampton deal while not perfect it does give the Steelers some leverage and more options in other dealings and the draft.

It's a wise business move, but, since I don't have to worry about the business side of things, I don't like the deal all that much.

Reed has been franchised and Clark will not be trans tagged, per the PG.

So here is an interesting question!!! With this news....

With Hampton's contract accounted for, the Steelers instead used the franchise tag on Reed, the team announced.

Reed has a career 83.3 percent field goal completion percentage over eight seasons, all in Pittsburgh. He converted 27 of 31 field goals in 2009 and scored 122 points.

Reed, like Orlindo Mare of the Seattle Seahawks, will be offered a one-year tender at $2.418 million. It would cost another team two first-round picks to acquire Reed if he signed a contract with them. The Steelers would also have seven days to match an offer from any other team.

Jeff Reed, despite his antics, is one of the most consistent and successful kickers in the NFL. What are the chances that someone would be willing to sign him and pony up the 2 first round picks?!?! And if you were the Steelers would you let him go?? Maybe take the picks and draft the kicker out of Michigan State K Swenson, Ohio State K Pettrie, or Texas K Lawrence???

The Raiders already have a kicker, so I think Reed is in the Black & Gold this season.

Oh, and I don't think the Casey deal is so bad....

In fact, I kinda like it.

It's not much more than he was making and only locks him in for two more years as the 11 million guarenteed effectively makes it a two year contract with a third year option.

Great! ... more kickoffs to the 15 yard line (w/tail wind)

    Poll idea...
Over or Under? Jeff Reed makes 1 tackle next season.

    Hurray for Hampton!

For the kinds coin Reed seems like he will be getting, he should be able to kick off deeper than he does. Just my two cents.
