    Steelers Designate Reed Franchise Player
    2-25-2010

The Steelers announced today that unrestricted free agent kicker Jeff Reed has been designated as the team’s franchise player for the 2010 season.

In order for a player to receive the franchise designation, a team must tender a one-year contract at the average of the five highest-paid players at the player’s position in 2009, or 120 percent of the player’s 2009 salary, whichever is greater.A franchise player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives two first-round draft choices as compensation.

Reed, a nine-year veteran, ranks second on the Steelers’ all-time scoring list with 855 points. He has converted 189 of 227 field goal attempts (83.3 percent) and 288 of 292 extra points (98.6 percent) while playing in 117 games during his NFL career. Reed led the Steelers with 122 points in 2009, converting 27 of 31 field goal attempts (87.1 percent) and all 41 extra points. He missed only two field goals of less than 50 yards last season.

Probably the best deal for the Steelers. Good chance that Skippy gets more than just the "average" long term in the free agency market especially with what Janikowski just got. This gives the Steelers another year of his services and not having to worry about pulling a kicker out of their asses... it also makes Reed a year older...

I dunno. Kicker is important for the Steelers just because of Heinz Field. It's not like we are in a dome where your kicker isn't as important. Finding someone that CAN kick at Hienz field is important especially with Bruce Arians as the OC. Red Zone offense usually results in FG attempts Arians

For the most part, Reed has been nothin' but money when it comes to FGs... Yea, he missed a few last season, but he was slightly injured as well if I recall correctly... But overall, if you look at his numbers, he's been stellar for us in that department.

My problem is his distance on KOs... It is a severe detriment IMO.

... But overall, I don't have any heartburn over tagging him.

As much as we all like to think that kickers shouldn't play such an important aspect into a teams makeup, especially value or draft wise....in this day and age...it does. I think it all changed several years ago with a fella named Vinaterri. Looking around the league this year and after the playoffs, the importance of a good kicker is no longer under rated.

... Not to mention one who has had repeated success with kicking FGs at Heinz Field.

Can't complain or argue with this. As has been said already, he is solid all around and has been money at Heinz field. I would think, a new contract is on the way.

Good news, I was hoping that they would find it in themselves to keep Reed. The dude has been pretty much money and as already mentioned, "he kicks field goals well" at Heinz field. We've all seen the "Heinz field struggles" from visiting kickers so we're lucky to have Reed. I also agree that his kickoffs are becomming **** poor. Maybe the new guy, the punter/kickoff specialist, will earn a roster spot and handle the kickoff duties.

You hate to pay a "kicker" that sort of coin but IMO a guy like Reed is worth that much to the Steelers since we can't just snag some random kicker and throw him in Heinz Field. Between the wins, and ****ty surface it's a big time gamble with kickers out there and that's a gamble as we saw in the playoffs that could be the matter of winning and losing..

If you have a guy that you can rely on in that type of field, you have to try and retain him

Completely agree with taggin him. As most have already stated, the conditions, Heinz field etc etc....

I would like to have him only kick field goals though. I'd love to have two kickers. One for FG (REed) and one for KOs.

As much **** as he gets for his off-the-field actions, I'm glad we're keeping him for a little while longer. He's been great FG-wise, I just wish his KO's weren't so ****ty.
