Default Steelers trying to extend free safety Clark

Steelers trying to extend free safety Clark
    By Mark J. Miller

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark can become an unrestricted free agent in one week and the Steelers would like to keep that from happening.

Now that the team has nose tackle Casey Hampton signed to a three-year, $21.3 million deal and have franchised kicker Jeff Reed, the attention is now on getting Clark under contract, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

[HIGH-LIGHT]For those of you hoping the deal doesn't get done so your team can sign one of the league's top free safeties, don't bother. The 30-year-old Clark doesn't appear to want to test free agency and is apparently offering himself at a discount of sorts to the Steelers. [/HIGH-LIGHT]

Good, we certainly need him. They have no one else, who? Mundy??? Yeah some Steelers fans didn't find the Bryant McFadden departure as a reason for concern last season either. We all know how that turned out with his replacement, William GAY!

Clark isn't that good. He looked good when Troy was playing beside him, but so did Ty Carter in the Denver game with Clark out. Just because Mundy sucks, that doesn't mean you should overpay for Clark. His agent is smoking crack if he truly believes Ryan Clark is one of the best free safety's in football.

Well If he wants to come on the cheap then I am all for it, Troy trusts him and looking at the list of FA FS aint much out there, so bring him back for 3 years draft a coverage FS in the draft (2nd round) bring back deashe to take over Carter`s role and your FS/SS is covered for the next couple of years.

If the price is right, I'm all for him, he fits well with the players around him. Perhaps his game looked a little weaker this past season because of the injuries to Troy, but who on D didn't.

IMO it is a bad thing to be so dependant on one player, especially in a team sport. I wonder if we will be able to sign Troy when the time comes, might be another Woodson thing, and he will head west.

He's not that bad either, I guess the bottom line is: He's good enough, and certainly better than the other Free Safeties on the Steelers roster, most likely better than a free agent pick up, and definitely better than starting a rookie who will have to learn LeBeau's system.

If there's better out there than I'm all for signing the better man. I just don't see anyone available who's better than Ryan Clark.
