Default Steelers to let Ryan Clark test Free Agency

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/...ee-agency.html

The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to let safety Ryan Clark to test the free agent market, according to an NFL source.

That stance has come about as the team has been discussing a contract with Clark's representative.

Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert has identified Clark as a core player the team wants to re-sign.

At this point, though, there's nothing concrete to indicate that a deal is imminent as talks haven't progressed quickly.

Talks haven't been cut off, but Clark is expected to reach unrestricted free agent status.

The Steelers signed nose guard Casey Hampton to a three-year contract last week and designated kicker Jeff Reed as their franchise player.

(this is merely conversation piece. Perhaps true, perhaps not... but it';s coming from a Ravensinsider)

I thought Clark gushed over how he wants to remain a Steeler and then he griped about wanting to book it because the fans were not happy with last seasons defense ?

I think it all comes down to money at the end.

He has said numerous times that he wants to stay in Pittsburgh and is willing to whatever necessary. His agent isn't so sure that he can't do much better elsewhere and is not very encouraging about a deal getting done. Clark himself sounded agitated in an interview because a deal hadn't been done yet. I doubt he's tendered an offer at this point (just my opinion, no concrete evidence of that anywhere).

He is a big hitter and I like that and I believe the Steelers can use that for their intimidation factor. Just the fact of not needing to school a new person on his position is a plus to re-signing him. On the other hand he is 30 or 31 I believe so I also wouldn't break the bank for him either.

This was posted in the P.G Steeler chat.

The Frenchman: Ed, does it seem to you like Ryan Clark (together with his agent) is over-playing his hand? I understand the agent represents the player, but does he really believe Clark is "the best free safety in the business" as he said last week? Seems like the gap between what Clark wants/believes he deserves and what the Steelers would be willing to pay must be very large. Ed Bouchette: My understanding is that's the case, that the sides are far apart and I do not expect them to get a deal done by Friday

Exactly, who in hell???? It's my opinion that this Ryan Clark re-signing is huge! I would rather have seen Casey Hampton testing the free agent market, hell that fat *** wouldn't have been too **** difficult to replace. Hell Chris Hoke, when he's on the field, seems to be more of a presence than Hampton.

Clark's not bad and besides that, who will replace him if he signs elsewhere? The Steelers sure as $hit don't have anyone on the roster who is capable of playing half as well as Clark. And PLEASE, do not say Mundy. The dude has proven nothing as of yet.

Are we expected to believe that the Steelers will draft a rookie FS who will step in and start this season? That's highly unlikely.

Is there some great free agent FS out there waiting to sign with the Steelers? If there is, remind me of his name because I keep forgetting.

The Steelers absolutely need Ryan Clark for another year or two and I would venture to say that Clark knows that he needs to be with the Steelers.

I am not a fan of resigning older players just because there is nobody else. We didn't have anyone on the roster to replace Chris Hope and signed Clark. We don't want to pay Clark, so will sign another FS.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Mundy start there with Keenan Lewis in reserve.

There are players out there, if it wasnt for the stupid CBA crap, who would be good/adequate replacements:

    Danieal Manning
    Abram Elam
    Sean Jones
    Brodney Pool

Id love to have Nick Collins...but that wont happen...same thing with OJ Atogwe...he's a little older than i would like...AND he was St. Louis' franchise player last season.

Hopefully the Steelers have something up their sleeve. They seemed to know something when Hope left and Clark arrived.

I still can't believe they thought William Gay was the answer...........
