Default Arrival delayed for Penguins' new winger

Arrival delayed for Penguins' new winger
    Wednesday, March 03, 2010
    By Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Winger Alexi Ponikarovsky, obtained by the Penguins late Tuesday night in a trade with Toronto, will not be able to join his new team until at least Friday because of an immigration holdup.

That means Ponikarovsky will miss Thursday's road game against the New York Rangers. His first possible game with the Penguins will be Saturday afternoon at home against Dallas.

Ponikarovsky -- who was dealt for prospect Luca Caputi and defenseman Martin Skoula -- does not have the proper work visa to be based in the United States. While with Toronto, he was able to play games in the United States as a visiting team member. He is Ukrainian.

Meanwhile, center Sidney Crosby is not practicing with the club. He is being given a rest after a long run in the Olympics followed by playing Tuesday night in a 3-2 home win over Buffalo.

I read that Poni became a Canadian citizen in 2007. Funny they didn't mention that here.

What ever the case, I would hope that Ray would tell Poni to take a few days and get himself (and family) situated. Think about it, the guy has a family and has played his entire NHL career in Toronto. I bet getting traded is a shock, no matter how well you try to prepare for it! Especially the first time.

Since he already went through the process of becoming a Canadian citizen, I wonder if he'll lean toward signing with a Canadian team, next year.

I heard somewhere that they were best buds when they were both in Kiev. Maybe they can get bunkbeds
