Default Gonchar seeking more than one year.

    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10062/1039839-87.stm

"I definitely want more than one year," Gonchar said. "I don't want to quit after one year."
The whole article isnt that great, because , well, Ron Cook wrote it, but this one part was interesting. I know its no big surprise, but Gonchar definitely is seeking more than one year, and the fact that he felt the need to say that, leads me to believe 1 year is all the Pens are willing to talk about.

Personally, I don't think he is worth bringing back, even at 1 year. At this stage in his career, I think it would be better to just hopefully get one more cup with him and then part ways.

I agree. I appreciate what he's done for us. I'm glad he got to win the Cup with us, and I'm glad he got career goal number 200 with us. Let's win one more Cup with him, and have our tearful goodbyes.

I wouldn't mind 2 year and a Guerin type contract, but nothing more, and I think he wants $4-$5mill per

Another thing to consider, is that because Gonch is 35, any contract he signs now, is Permanant. So if he decides to retire and go play in the KHL, or if he gets injured and can't play, we are stuck with his contract on the books for the duration of the contract. The only way out is to trade him to someone willing to take on the contract.

Too much risk in signing Gonchar.

If Shero only offered Gonchar a 1 year contract then he wasn't serious about retaining Gonchar cause there's no way on earth he was thinking "Gonchar will settle for a 1 year contract at age 35!). No freaking way.

You do 2 years with Gonchar it's not happening under $10 million total.

There's really no good way of Gonchar coming back that isn't going to equal..

    1. Long term contract we're stuck with
    2. Yearly costs that kill us under the cap

So long Gonchar. you're really nothing more than our "rental player" for this years playoffs. Next year you can go snag your big last contract and finish out your career playing for a garbage team like Edmonton

Like was stated he probably wants a minimum of 3 years. If he would sign for less I might consider anyway, say 2 years at $3 M. But $4 -5M per - forget it.

Hopefully we win the cup and then allow Gonch to play the field. we will free up enough room to re-sign Tanger and then look for a scoring winger to sign.

    I agree

That's why Shero broke off the talks and said wait until after the season.

Gonch is looking for that last big score.

That's a great point and something I'd forgotten. Thanks.

i do not believe that is true. If a player retires his numbers do not count I do believe.

Shero's playing this right... to wait until the season is over. Gonchar is already highly regarded. If he leads the Pens to another cup, his stock doesn't go up much. If he suffers a season ending injury or plays like crap the rest of the way, then his value will definately go down.

Like I've said all along, it's going to come down to how badly Gonchar wants to play for Pittsburgh. Stranger things have happened. Just look at Fedotenko. I thought he was a goner after last season, but he took less to come back. Some players woulld rather not move their family, etc. this late in their career. We shall see.
