Default Benny's Ridiculously Early Mock Draft

Yeah its ridiculously early...so shoot me.

We've talked about the draft a lot around here lately and so I thought I would put out my ridiculously early prediction for the Pirates. I will start off by saying that when Anthony Ranaudo comes back from his injury--which I heard could be this week--and if he continues with no problem, then I think he'll be the best player available to us. As it is, I am not going to select an injured player with the #2 overall pick. I also will not be having high schoolers in this draft...really too tough to predict. It is MORE than likely that the Pirates will select some high upside HS players in this draft...but it all depends on who falls because of signability etc.

    1. Anthony Rendon, Rice
Kipper wants a college bat...and here it is for him. If Ranaudo was healthy he'd be here, but I also like what Rendon brings to the table...a very high upside bat with good defense to boot.

    2. Cole Cook, Pepperdine
A 6'6 220lb righty with three plus pitches...his low to mid 90s fastball and a mid-80s changeup and he even throws a type of slurve I believe. Not a huge strike out pitcher, but lots of upside.

    3. Derek Dietrich, Georgia Tech
One of the best college short stops, in my opinion. He can hit, he can field, and projects as a solid ML SS.

    4. Harold Martinez, Miami
Powerful 1B...a position we need...but better yet an ultra talented player from a great baseball school.

    5. Jason Esposito, Vanderbilt
Another plus SS...I know him personally so there might be some bias here LOL.

    6. Matt Harvey, UNC
Underachiever with plus ability but just hasn't lived up...good risk here

    7. Matt Gaudet, LSU
A kid who was a transfer and sat out all last year but has exploded onto the scene this season

You are right. Nice. He would have been the best college bat though ROFL.

WAYYYYY too early. I'm not even going to consider a pitcher (17% success rate ) but let's allow these kids to play some actual games this season This season is really going to be what shapes the order by the talking heads and give us better insight into the players

No problem Benny.....Rendon should be a very high pick next year.

Yeah...he'll be the best bat next year I think. I thought he was an eligible sophomore. That's my bad.

    Replace Rendon with Deck McGuire.

Here's Keith Law's take on the first round pick from today:

I would have said Ranaudo a week or so ago, but with him out, it could be Deck McGuire, and I've heard them as one of a few teams in love with Chris Sale (who doesn't belong anywhere that high). Maybe I should say "in like" since it's still 3 months from the draft.

I would absolutely hate it if we picked Sale...he has less of a chance of being a dominant pitcher than MANY other pitchers...and still has Kipper's bust likelihood. Furthermore, a guy like Cook (second round kinda guy...really isn't a first round guy even with a great year) is as good if not better than Sale in my mind.

I don't see NH picking a HS pitcher at #2....

Chris Sale is a 20 year old college pitcher...

I have seen MTSU play a ton of times live...not really well acquainted with Miller though. I normally am watching from the Vandy side. LOL
