Default Can Dennis Dixon Be A Legit Starting QB?

Given Ben's newest bout of mental diarhea/****head behavior this is not an off the wall question. Dixon showed great promise in college and looked alright against the Ravens his one start. If he can learn his reads and play smart, he seems to have the physical tools to do the job.

I think that making sure Batch is about to mentor Dixon, just in case, would be a good start. Dixon did well, all things considered, in his only full outing last year. An experienced mind and a steadying on-field influence might be a great help.

In any event, the Steelers need help at QB.

Charlie hasn't been able to make it through a game in two consecutive seasons now and Dixon is raw material.

I agree with trying to get Lefty back.

If I was Tomlin I would have already been on the phone with Colbert trying to scheme a deal with Tampa.

Evidently, they don't think much of the guy as he was their third.

Dixon would have been a 1st-Rounder had he not been hurt.

Leaf was a complete and total wanker.

Dixon has been around long enough to free us of that worry.

    Dynamic Dixon intrigues Steelers
    Buzz up!
    By Scott Brown, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Wednesday, April 30, 2008

He piled up 368 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns. He led Oregon to a 39-7 shellacking of Michigan in front of more than 100,000 fans as well as a national TV audience.

Dennis Dixon thrust himself into the Heisman Trophy race with that performance last September -- and into the consciousness of Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert.

"The first thing I thought about was Vince Young," said Colbert, who saw Dixon play extensively for the first time against Michigan. "He was winning that game by himself."

The Steelers, who took Dixon in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on Sunday, won't ask the 23-year-old quarterback to win any games in the near future. They are optimistic that eventually he can back up Ben Roethlisberger, a role the 33-year-old Charlie Batch has filled so capably, and get on the field in select situations.

Oh, I don't think Dixon is a Leaf, at all...

But being a first rounder isn't a guarantee of anything.

    Especially at QB.

That was the only point I was making.....

Dixon worries me that he may have some of the same issues as Kordell did.

Not being able to throw over the middle and needing to rely on his legs too much.

    Other than that....

It could be a lot worse.

He could have Kent Graham or Tommy post Tennesee issues.

I think he is fine as a back up. Need him for a game or two, fine. I don't like the idea of relying on him if Ben goes down with a season ending injury. Dixon is a career back up at best imo. Honestly I think I'd rather have someone with the potential to be a starter in the NFL. Then again I guess we should feel lucky that we have one legit starter, that is better than a lot of teams.

    No.

Dixon's legacy is to be a solid backup, not a starter. If things go badly for Ben, and it looks like that's a possibility, we're back to square one on a starting QB.

It could be another decade before we find a decent franchise QB. Decent.

He did well because teams didn't know how to prepare for him. A few starts and a few defensive adjustments and we are dead meat.

Leftwich is a good backup and will never be anything more. He is a disaster as a starter. I had to watch him for years (Down here Jacksonville way) there are many reasons the Jags got rid of him and Tampa put him on the bench.

Don't let one year limited duty as a backup in Pittsburgh fool you. If Ben is done in the Burgh, we need to find another QB to take his place long term and personally I don't believe that guy is on the roster now.

I agree and I thought we're talking about backups and not replacements for Ben, my bad. Just not to start another thread, I wonder what team will grab Jake Dellome or however you spell his name ?
Think he will end up as a starter or backup ? I don't know much about him other than his last couple of seasons were poor. Wonder who will replace him ?
