    Default Vazquez is worried

    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10070...id=pirates.xml

Basically Dejan asked Ramon Vazquez how he was feeling, expecting him to talk about his knee or his solid performance in the game today. Instead he went on about his current position with the team. He said that management has told him that he'll have to win a spot on the roster and if he doesn't he's on the way out.

Huntington says there are 6 guys for 4 spots (on the bench), but really it's 4 guys for 2 spots, or 2 sets of 2 guys for one spot. Pretty much comes down to:

    Ramon Vazquez vs. Delwyn Young
    John Raynor vs. Brandon Moss

It's pretty obvious that Vazquez was put at 2nd against the Orioles for a reason. They need a short term 2b with Roberts probably starting the season on the DL. I wouldn't doubt if Vazquez were traded before the end of the week.

'Twould seem Vazquez would do better with another team. Assuming his knee is now more or less healthy, he could probably help the Orioles for a few weeks, though his days as a regular are surely over. But really, Vazquez just doesn't hit enough, and he's not so superlative with the glove (even if healthy) that a hitting-challenged team like the Pirates could afford to carry him. Even with Young's defensive issues, I'd gladly take him over Vazquez. Also, give me Raynor over Moss.

Raynor versus Moss isn't a battle. Last night on FSN they talked about how Moss admitted he stunk last year. Right now you take the speed and upside of Raynor and cut your losses with Moss.

Ah, but will Neil Huntington look at it that way? That is the question, given that Moss was his boy and was considered a key to the Jason Bay trade at the time it went down. I'm curious to see if "Captain Hook" is as quick to cut his own guys as he was to purge all of Littlefield's crew.

He has already begun weeding out some of HIS lower round draft picks from the 2008 draft.

He just released Chris Aure in the last month.....2008 15th RD pick ......there are also a few other lower picks that have been released...Mark Carver, Matt Payne, Owen Brolsma, Allen Ponder, Al ***an. Most likely there will be more at the end of ST.

Hmmm.....okay. Well, let's hope he's similarly efficient with "his" guys on the big league roster. I think Moss needs to go.

If he continues to play as he has this spring he will make NH's decision easy.

His last at bat last night was sad. He looked like a guy who had already been cut.

I wonder if he could get through waivers if the Pirates release him ...oh well lets see how the rest of the month plays out for him.

Raynor and Moss are both his guys so he'd be cutting one of his own one way or another.
