    Default Crosby, wow

He's having a pretty big spring. Hope it carries into the season.

Morton, 5 homers lead Pirates over Yankees, 10-5
    Sunday, March 14, 2010
    By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Charlie Morton pitched four scoreless innings, and five home runs -- two by Bobby Crosby, one each by Akinori Iwamura, Delwyn Young and Steve Pearce -- carried the Pirates past the New York Yankees, 10-5, this afternoon at McKechnie Field.

Crosby went 3 for 3 with three RBIs after replacing shortstop Ronny Cedeno, whose right hand was lacerated while stealing a base in the third inning. Cedeno will be out until Wednesday.

The cut, above the thumb and forefinger, did not require stitches and had only a small bandage. It was caused by New York second baseman Robinson Cano stepping on the hand.

"Just a cut," Cedeno said. "I got a little lucky."

Morton made his best start of the spring, with four scoreless innings, a hit, walk and four strikeouts. Unlike his first two appearances, he was aggressive with all his pitches, including some work inside.

"I did what I was supposed to do: I pitched inside and controlled both sides of the plate," Morton said. "I think I went out there and put the emphasis on competing. Not so much getting my pitches in. Not so much working on things. But having a good lineup in the box, you just need to go after them."

Iwamura gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead with his solo shot off CC Sabathia in the fourth, a high drive that clanged off the scoreboard above left-center. That followed a 2-for-13 start to Iwamura's spring.

    "That felt good," Iwamura said.

That lead became 6-0 with a five-run fifth, highlighted by Crosby's RBI double off fresh reliever Jonathan Albaladejo, Andrew McCutchen's two-run double. Garrett Jones' sacrifice fly and Ryan Doumit's RBI single.

Sabathia, who exited early in that inning when Andy LaRoche's comebacker nicked his glove, was charged with three runs over 4 1/3 innings.

After his previous start, when the Pirates hammered him for five runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings, Sabathia told reporters: "I always say results don't matter until you give up eight runs in two innings to the Pirates."

As it turned out, it was eight runs over 6 2/3 innings in two games.

Crosby, Young and Pearce hit solo home runs in the seventh. Young has homered in three consecutive games. Crosby's other home run came in the eighth.

The Pirates' B-game with the Baltimore Orioles ended in a 1-1 tie after 9 1/2 innings. Brad Lincoln was charged with a run on two hits over three innings. He struck out four, walked one. Brian Burres, Bryan Morris and Donnie Veal each pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Brian Friday had the Pirates' only hit, a single.

The Pirates, 4-7-1 in Grapefruit League play, are in Bradenton again tomorrow to face the Philadelphia Phillies. Zach Duke will pitch against Roy Halladay.

    I agree.

But, I have spent way too many springs in the past getting excited over a hitter, only to see them fall flat once the real pitching starts.

Do I remember? Andy & Adam inspired my screen name. It feels like we're always waiting for a LaRoche brother to fulfill their potential.

Craig Wilson, Mark Smith, ...................what was the 1st baseman's name that cocked his leg? Mark something?

Remember the year McClendon and Espy started the regular season on a tear?

Didn't Joggin Ronny Paulino hit about .550 a couple springs ago?

He then proceeded to hit around .125 for April.

Of course nothing is written in stone...but Crosby looked great yesterday. I was sitting down the first base line and had a good view on both taters...no wind-aiding on either of them.

That being said...I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that he doesn't Meares-out on us...or start doing the Polka-vich...or something like that...

Crosby was a highly prized prospect who has produced previously at the ML level. He's in good shape, doesn't have any "mental" issues, and seems to really want to prove something. He's not really like any of the other guys mentioned in this thread, so I think his chances for success are a little higher.

Geez, man, I think 22 HR for a rookie of the year shortstop is something, certainly more production than Cecil Espy, Mark Smith, Ronnie Paulino, et al...
