Default Can someoneInterpret the Hines Ward "non catch" rule?

I just don't get the reasoning behind that rule. Ward has possession tumbles two times and loses the ball out of bounds and its not a catch? WHAAAA?

Its like the play in week 1 Raiders vs Chargers in the endzone. I understand its a rule, but whats the logic behind the rule?

Now I am going to be absurd to make my point.

Lets say the Steelers sign world class tumbler Yuri Yurkinavozkyivalism to replace Limas Sweed. In his first game, Yuri (who doesn't understand the rules) Catches a ball making a tumbling catch in the endzone. Since Yuri is a tumbler (and he doesn't understand the rules) he instinctively keeps tumbling. He tumbles out of the endzone, out of the stadium, across the 6th street bridge, out trough the Liberty tunnel, onto 51 south and he tumbles all the way to Mr. Smartmonies house in Uniontown. In Uniontown on his 227,432 tumble the ball comes lose, now by the current NFL rule? IS IT NOT A CATCH?'

    ----Bdeff---Demonstrating absurdity by being absurd.

you have to maintain possession all the way to the ground. this is also interpreted as until your momentum has stopped. essentially the catch may have occurred in bounds, but until your momentum from whatever brought you to the ground has stopped, you have not maintained control.

as far as the tumbler, i must say i am unfamiliar with that craft, however, i would assume at some point they are supplying their own momentum in such a sojurn. at the point at which the original momentum ceases, or they apply new momentum while presumably not rising to their feet, if the ball is in their possession, then it is a catch. i would think though that a pothole or two along the route would make such a distance tumble unbearable.
