Exactly. I think it goes as much to the Pirates finally having some options. In years past, having Hart "learn on the job" was probably the only alternative.

Default Pirates rotation has no Hart........

McCutchen has just been named the 5th Starter. It is a good call, hopefully he takes this opportunity and runs with it. I think there is a good chance that this rotation can be pretty solid. If Mac can approach 10-1e wins, that would be sweet.

I'm surprised as well. It sounded like and felt like they were going to hold onto Hart no matter what. McCutchen deserved the start and I felt long before this was Hart's job to lose that Mccutchen would make the better #5 starter...

Let's make no mistakes though, this was clearly Hart's job to lose and it appeared that he needed to have an awful spring to lose that job... Hart possibility had one of the worst springs one that was handed a job could've hoped for,

Maybe I'm just drawing my own conclusions here, but reading Huntington's quotes it almost sounds like McCutchen hasn't won anything beyond 1 start this year. McCutchen will start Sunday the 11th in Arizona, then the 5th spot won't be used again for almost two full weeks on Saturday the 24th in Houston. If Hart manages to turn in a couple good starts in Indy I wouldn't be surprised if he makes that April 24 start.

Had to go search for what you were talking about...

Stuff from Neal Huntington just now ...

    > On the schedule, he said that, because the Pirates have three off-days in the opening 15 days of their regular season, the fifth starter is set to pitch just one game in that span: April 11 in Phoenix. The fifth starter's next appearance would be April 24 in Houston.

    > On Hart: "There's going to be a lot made that he lost the fifth-starter job. The reality is, we've got one start between now and April 24 when our fifth starter will be used. Kevin has some work to do. We're excited about the potential. We love the stuff. He didn't pitch well this spring training and, as of now, Daniel McCutchen outpitched him and will be our starter for April 11. Daniel has a chance to put a stranglehold on the job with what he does between now and April 11, what he does on April 11, and what he does after. It means that Kevin Hart has some work to do. We're excited about his upside. We felt it was best to take him out of camp right now to be able to solidify some things mechanically and be able to get him to trust his stuff and make it play at the Major League level at some point for us.
It REALLY sounds like Huntington is hell bent on not giving up on Hart and seriously thinks that Hart can rectify his issues by May. Maybe he can, maybe he can't, but with that sort of schedule or lack of for a #5 starter it makes complete sense to send Hart down to AAA where he will get regular starts which is what he needs.

I'd send McCutchen down after that one start as well. Why we need 12 pitchers, I have no idea. But if they want to hang on to Raynor, they'll almost certainly need an extra bench spot to do so.

Maybe they will juggle McCutchen and Clement between Indy and Pitts. to keep a spot open for Raynor?????

They won't be juggling Clement. I wanna say he's got 1 option remaining so they'll be more careful with that. McCutchen is a definite possibility.

Shame cause all they need to do is cut Brandon Moss

That is indeed how it sounds. However, Hart struggled all year and then this offseason (ST) has been absolutely abysmal. I wish the kid the best, but McCutchen has earned his right to pitch...Hart hasn't
