Default It's always been the pitching

There's a link on the Bucs' MLB page
    http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/ne...=.jsp&c_id=pit

about our All-Decade team. It goes to show how awful we've been. While we can put together a very good offensive and defensive team, our pitching has been awful. Other Than O Perez' 2004 season, we've not had a #1 starter type at any time. Perhaps a #2 here and there (Ritchie/Wells), but on the whole, we've had a bunch of #3 thru #5 type starters. And nobody has put together two 'top shelf' years back to back.

Hopefully, with Neal stockpiling all these young pitchers we can actually get a true ML pitching staff and not a buncha "gee, I hope he holds them to 3 runs in 6 inn" type of staff?

yeah i have some high hopes for alderson, and morton, and im still holding out for hart. Not every pitcher has to be a number one, but you really need to be able to find and have ready at least 1 every six years

Wow that rotation for the entire decade is PITIFUL. Josh Fogg as a number 1...

I think the Pirates need to go all out on pitching in this year's draft. I think either Alderson or Lincoln needs to emerge as a solid #2-3

When's the last time the Bucs had a decent pitching staff? Do we have to go back to the Doug Drabek years or even further than that?

Looking just at the starting staff they were 5th in the league in ERA in 1990, 2nd in 1991, and 4th in 1992. I kind of assumed that would be the last time they were in the top 10, but they were actually 8th in 1998 (Cordova, Schmidt, Lieber, Peters, Silva) and 9th in 1999 (Ritchie, Benson, Schmidt, Cordova).

wow, I wouldn't have guessed the staff was not too bad in '98 and '99. Jason Schmidt was an absolute stud! Thanks for the info, Jnn!
