    Roethlisberger
Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not report to the Steelers offseason conditioning program.

Team spokesman Dave Lockett says the two-time Super Bowl quarterback is not expected to join his teammates this week for voluntary offseason workouts that begin Monday.

After discussing whether Roethlisberger's presence on Monday would create too much of a distraction, the decision was made for him not to attend the team's offseason program, according to a source.

It remains uncertain when Roethlisberger will report to the team.

Last week, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he expected Roethlisberger to arrive with the rest of the Pittsburgh veterans. The quarterback also skipped voluntary workouts with the team two weeks ago.

The conditioning work involves no on-field practicing, but instead emphasizes weight lifting and getting into football shape.

Roethlisberger is accused of assaulting a 20-year-old college student in a Georgia nightclub on March 5, but charges have not been filed. Roethlisberger's lawyer says the quarterback committed no crime. An investigation is ongoing.

Roethlisberger also is being sued by a woman who says he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel. He denies the allegation and has asked for counter-damages.

Adam Schefter is an NFL reporter for ESPN Insider. Information from The Associated Press contributed to this story.

... From what I saw from the pictures of him, he could use a little bit of "conditioning". Don't get me wrong, the boy can do his thing at any weight as far as I'm concerned... I don't give two ****s about him, but only his production on the field.

Maybe he should get a universal gym for his poolside cabana....

And with this, it tells me the Rooneys are very upset with Ben. I wonder if this is a sign of the begining of the end ? I hope it is just the Rooneys way of saying, " place your ego and guy junk in check as long as your a Steeler you stupid ***. "

I have a feeling that Ben might get the axe if he is found guilty on either of the charges.

Default Steelers: Roethlisberger not expected Monday...WTF???

    Steelers: Roethlisberger not expected Monday
By ALAN ROBINSON AP Sports Writer

PITTSBURGH(AP)—Ben Roethlisberger’s return to the Pittsburgh Steelers apparently won’t occur this week.

The two-time Super Bowl quarterback is not expected to join his teammates this week for voluntary offseason workouts that begin Monday, team spokesman Dave Lockett said Sunday night.

Roethlisberger has been accused of assault by a 20-year-old Georgia college student, but he has not been charged in the case. An investigation is ongoing, and it is possible the Steelers advised Roethlisberger not to show up to avoid creating a distraction.

Roethlisberger also is being sued in Nevada by a woman who is accusing him of assaulting her in a Lake Tahoe hotel in 2008. He has strongly denied the accusation and has filed a counter suit in the case.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said last week at the NFL meetings in Orlando that players who took 1,000 or more snaps last season were due to report Monday, including Roethlisberger. However, some additional Steelers veteran players in addition to Roethlisberger also aren’t expected to show up this week, but Lockett did not identify them.

The conditioning work involves no on-field practicing, but instead emphasizes weight lifting and getting into football shape.

Such workouts are not open to reporters, but a large number were expected at the Steelers headquarters Monday because Roethlisberger has not commented on the Georgia incident since it occurred earlier this month.

Now, the question is when Roethlisberger will try to get back to football work.

The Steelers aren’t scheduled to begin on-field practicing until April 19, when they begin OTAs - NFL shorthand for organized team activities. Such practices resemble those held during the season and starting quarterbacks usually take part in most sessions unless they are injured.

Despite the strong start to Roethlisberger’s career - he has taken the Steelers to two NFL titles and three AFC championship games in six seasons - and the estimated $66 million left on his $102 million contract, the Steelers are clearly upset with the quarterback’s off-field problems.

Team president Art Rooney II has met with Roethlisberger, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also plans to meet with the quarterback at an unspecified time. Tomlin also has been in constant contact with Roethlisberger.

“We take this issue very seriously,” Goodell said on March 22. “I am concerned that Ben continues to put himself in this position.

Rooney said the Steelers are “in a situation (where) we’re going to let this investigation play out and then go from there.”

The NFL has not said if Roethlisberger might be suspended if he is charged in the Georgia case.

Despite Roethlisberger’s problems, Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said the team does not anticipate drafting a quarterback in the early rounds next month.

I truly doubt that it was Big Ben that decided he would not attend. I am sure he would want to do anything to get back in the good graces of the FO, his teammates, and the NFL. Skipping out of any team associated get togethers does not accomplish that.

IMO this is Rooney's version of tough love.

Seems funny..wasn't it last week when MT was in FLA that he insinuated that BB would be at the work outs? Guess upper management had other ideas.

Tomlin said that he expects Roethlisberger to show up on March 29th when veterans report to OTA's.

"The off season program started March the 15th, and we have a rolling report date," Tomlin said. " I generally start the practice squad guys and backups first. The 500 snap guys reported yesterday and the 1000 snap guys including, Ben report on the 29th, so we will see where we are at then."

Roethlisberger skipped voluntary workouts with the team last week. Tomlin has no doubt the quarterback who has won two Super Bowls in his six pro seasons will attend all required offseason practices and training sessions. Those begin March 29 for the regulars.
"When it's time for him to be there, he'll want to be there," Tomlin said. "He doesn't mind toting the burden of being the guy carrying our football team."

OK are these voluntary or required workouts?

Coach Mike Tomlin said that all players who were injured or had surgery are coming along nicely. However, he said he will reduce the amount of workouts/practice time for 30-something veterans such as Aaron Smith (rotator cuff surgery) and Justin Hartwig (shoulder cleanup surgery) this spring. Safety Troy Polamalu is working out in California and has recovered from two knee injuries last season that did not require surgery.
