    Default Lineup news

If anyone's noticed the lineups the last few days the Pirates have been hitting the pitcher 8th, and Iwamura has been getting a lot of time at leadoff. John Russell confirmed today that, at least to start the season, they will be putting the pitcher in the 8 hole and Iwamura at leadoff. McCutchen will hit second, but also hit first in certain games. Ronny Cedeno will be in the 9 hole. Here's what the lineup will most likely look like:

    1. Aki Iwamura, 2B
    2. Andrew McCutchen, CF
    3. Garrett Jones, RF
    4. Ryan Doumit, C
    5. Lastings Milledge, LF
    6. Jeff Clement, 1B
    7. Andy LaRoche, 3B
    8. Zach Duke, P
    9. Ronny Cedeno, SS

The thinking kind of makes sense in that they want guys on base for McCutchen, but Cedeno is the wrong guy to put in the 9 spot if that's the plan. A .280 career OBP isn't going to be a huge help there.

I would switch Cedeno and LaRoche in that line-up.

Well, yeah, but isn't the number 9 spot in the lineup where one normally puts a team's weakest hitter, whether they are using the DH or not?

if you're putting the weakest hitter in the 9 hole then yes...that would be the pitcher 99x out of 100. If your'e moving the pitcher up to the #8 to get someone on in front of a productive leadoff hitter, then you don't put the worst guy left in the 9-hole.
