If ever there were a movie that needs to be in 3D...
Paramount stuffs ‘Baywatch’ bikini with Gatewood and Tanaka

Some people stand in the darkness…
Afraid to step into the light…

Not screenwriters Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who have been hired by Paramount to write the screenplay for the studio’s feature adaptation of “Baywatch.”

Yes, that’s Gatewood and Tanaka at right, who couldn’t possibly look more like exactly the guys you’d want writing a “Baywatch” movie.

The studio is looking to push the project forward to a summer 2011 release.

Contrafilm’s Tripp Vinson and Beau Flynn are producing along with Montecito Picture Co.’s Ivan Reitman, Tom Pollock, Jeff Clifford and Joe Medjuck. Montecito’s Cold Spring Pictures is co-financing.

“The Break-Up” co-writer Jeremy Garelick was brought on to rewrite and direct in July. The hiring of Gatewood and Tanaka further points to a largely comedic take on the property, since the pair has their original comedy “The Sitter” set up at Fox with David Gordon Green directing and Jonah Hill starring.

Additionally, insiders place the “Baywatch” adaptation in the context of a TV revamp like “Charlie’s Angels” rather than “Starsky and Hutch,” which indicates that female-driven action is also on the menu.

The project springs from the 1990s NBC television series about a bunch of lifeguards patrolling a California beach that then exploded into worldwide syndication. DreamWorks originally bought the film rights in 2004 and hired “National Security” writers Jay Scherick and David Ronn to adapt it to the big screen.

The original show’s creators — Michael Berk, Doug Schwartz, Greg Bonann and Michele Berk — are also producers on the feature.

Gatewood and Tanaka, who are repped by UTA and Industry Entertainment, also have their pilot “Jack B. Quick” in development at Cartoon Network with Dan Lin producing.
