    Default April 2 Pirates-Phillies

I figure our GDT's need to get in one final ST game before we're ready for the season. Games on FSN tonight and a free MLB.com webcast as well.

I'm supposed to be working tonight, but I don't expect anyone to actually come in. We'll see how that goes.

This one almost feels like a real game, in a real stadium, with basically the regular lineups (aside from Brian Schneider in for Carlos Ruiz).

    Pirates:
    1. Akinori Iwamura 2B
    2. Andrew McCutchen CF
    3. Garrett Jones RF
    4. Ryan Doumit C
    5. Lastings Milledge LF
    6. Jeff Clement 1B
    7. Andy LaRoche 3B
    8. Ross Ohlendorf P
    9. Ronny Cedeno SS

    Phillies
    1. Jimmy Rollins SS
    2. Placido Polanco 3B
    3. Chase Utley 2B
    4. Ryan Howard 1B
    5. Jayson Werth RF
    6. Raul Ibanez LF
    7. Shane Victorino CF
    8. Brian Schneider C
    9. Cole Hamels P

the only thing that would make it better is if it was being broadcast in HD

Here are some numbers as I try to kill time sitting at this desk:

    2009:
    Ross Ohlendorf: 11-10 3.92 ERA 1.234 WHIP 5.6 K/9 2.06 K/BB
    vs. Phillies 0-0 12 IP 11 K 7 BB 2 HR 5 ER 3.75 ERA
    Cole Hamels: 10-11 4.32 ERA 1.286 WHIP 7.8 K/9 3.91 K/BB
    vs. Pirates 0-0 14 IP 13 K 2 BB 3 HR 5 ER 3.21 ERA

    2009 hitting:

    Andrew McCutchen vs. Phillies:
    25 AB .360/.407/.760 3 HR 2 SB 2 CS

    Garrett Jones vs. Phillies:
    26 AB .261/.346/.783 4 HR 2 SB 0 CS

    Ryan Howard vs. Pirates
    26 AB .316/.462/.684 2 HR 1 SB 0 CS

    Jimmy Rollins vs. Pirates
    28 AB .333/.429/.708 2 HR 4 SB 0 CS

The games between these two teams last year were pretty crazy. HRs and SBs all over the place. The Phillies won the season series 4-2, but most of the games were closer than you'd expect and it took an epic Matt Capps meltdown (1/3 IP 5 ER) to prevent a 3-3 split.

I forgot to bring headphones so I'm barely getting any sound out of this stupid machine, but I did manage to get the video running without the computer exploding. It doesn't look the game's starting for at least several more minutes. Either it's not even close to a 7:05 start or the feed is way behind.

Ohlendorf has an ERA near 10 and more walks than strikeouts this spring. That's probably not good.

Danny Moskos just made a brief appearance on TV, just walking by the camera. He's in uniform tonight Apparently he's going back to Altoona to start the year in the bullpen with an eye on Indy when they decide he's ready.

The game's actually about to start now.

Iwamura leads off. He's a little chubbier than I remembered him with the Rays. He goes down swinging on a low inside curve. 4 pitch AB.

Count goes to 2-2 on McCutchen who also got fooled pretty badly on a curve. He takes the next pitch which was low and outside and hits it off the end of the bat. Just drops in in right for a single.

Jones goes 0-2, fouls a pitch off then swings through an outside fastball for another strikeout.

Doumit hitting from the right side. He's sporting a new beard that's different from the long one he had earlier in spring training. Doumit works a 2-2 count and lines one to left right at Raul Ibanez. He didn't have to go far to get to it.

All 4 batters seemed to have trouble with Hamels curveball that inning. Seems to be throwing it well.

Jimmy Rollins leads off. Takes a 2-1 pitch the other way. Milledge has no shot at it, but took an angle like he was trying to catch it rather than cutting it off, and the ball rolls to the wall. Likely a double anyway, but there might have actually been a play.

Polanco lines one into right center. No chance for a play at the plate. RBI single.

Utley hits a ground ball between Clement and Iwamura who was playing more towards second. Not hard hit, but very well placed and no one has a chance at making a play. Polanco to second on the single.

Ryan Howard bounces to Clement at first. Hit too slowly for a play anywhere but first. Second and third one out.

Werth strikes out on a 2-2 high fastball.

Raul Ibanez strikes out looking on a nice looking fastball on the inside corner.

It wasn't a great inning from Ohlendorf. Threw something like 24 pitches, but stranded the 2 men in scoring position and only gave up the 1 run.

Dude is looking fat. Not good for a guy who should improve defense. Let's hope Ross can avoid long line of 1 year starter wonders.

Milledge leads off the second. Hamels gets the first pitch strike again (that's every batter so far), but falls behind 3-1. Milledge swings at ball 4 high and in and fouls it away, then strikes out on the low curveball.

Clement hits the first pitch hard, but Utley makes a sliding play to get the force at first.

Andy LaRoche takes a first pitch ball. That's the first of the game from Hamels. Ohlendorf had about 5. Count winds up full. Hard hit grounder through the middle, Rollins makes a nice diving stop, but LaRoche beats the throw easily at first.

Ohlendorf with a ridiculously weak grounder to third. Polanco decides to just see if it goes foul, but it doesn't. Ohlendorf beats a throw.

Hard hit ball by Cedeno almost drills LaRoche and goes right to Rollins. Easy play at second.

Victorino with a little tapper to the mound. No trouble for Ohlendorf there.

Schneider with a flyball to left center. McCutchen calls off Milledge and makes the catch.

    Hamels grounds to Iwamura.

    Nice quick inning.

Iwamura leads off again. Starts out 0-2, but comes back full and strikes out again.

McCutchen jumps on a fastball and lines it into left center. Cruises into second easily.

Jones lines one into center. Throw's up the line a little at the plate. May have had a chance at the plate with a good throw. Jones goes into second. Probably scored a single.

Doumit gets jammed and hits a weird little flare at Howard.

Milledge with a line drive into center. Jones beats a throw at the plate.

Clement takes a ball. Milledge got a great jump and is into second easily. Nice hit into right center and Milledge scores easily.

Hard hit grounder between third and short for LaRoche and it's into left field. Clement to second on the single.

    Ohlendorf strikes out swinging.

    3-1 Pirates now.

It's about time I got to watch a Pirate game in HD and post wireless. A first for me.
