Default I'm Fired Up For Opening Day

I'm really glad I've found this site. Reading the threads has me really fired up for tomorrow. Living in Central PA, it is easy for me to find friends to talk to about the Steelers, the Penguins, & the Nittany Lions. However, sadly, none of them want to talk Pirates with me. My two best friends are big-time baseball fans, but, they are die-hard Phillies fans. My Dad used to live for Pirates baseball, and I used to talk to him everyday about the Pirates. Even through the bad times that that we are suffering through, he never wavered. I truly miss having him around to talk to. All other Pirates fans that I used to talk to back in the early 90's have jumped ship, proving that they weren't "real" fans to begin with.

I think I'm pretty realistic. I know that the playoffs aren't in the cards this season or anytime real soon. I also think it is a long-shot for our Bucs to get to .500 this year. All of that said, this is as excited as I've been for a season in a long time. Unlike most of the last 17, I finally see a plan in place and a future that has a shot at being bright. McCutchen was just a joy to watch burst onto the scene last year. He is everything we had heard and then some. His passion that he plays with, makes him a blast to watch as a fan. I really do think the Pirates offense is going to make solid strides this year. Garrett Jones is NOT a fluke, in my opinion. I'm not sure where the average is going to end up, but, he is going to put up the homers again. I see most predicting around 25-30, I'm projecting more in the 30-35 range. I like the fact that Milledge is getting his attitude together, because not many argue that the tools are there. If Doumit can stay healthy, I think the middle of our lineup will surprise many. Hopefully, the pitching will be solid, and the defense doesn't drop off too much (probably my biggest concern), and we can take a BIG step in the right direction. I'm anxious to watch it all play out !!!

Definitely looking forward to opening day...

    .....LET'S GO BUCS!!!.....

... BTW, I'm thinking of getting a new jersey this year, and would like to get a few opinions. I've narrowed it down to these two choices... The black "batting practice" jersey, or this Clemente "Cooperstown collection" jersey.... Any thoughts about them, or does anyone have one and can comment on it?

I like the black jersey myself, but you cant go wrong with clemente. Either way john steigerwald thinks men who buy or wear jerseys are pathetic 's and or 's. Of course this is coming from a man who was fired from his job, and is simply writing things on his blog to try and get people to buy his book. But i have to admit he got it half right, i read his blog because almost everything he writes ****es me off, i just wont spend any of my hard earned money on his *****y whiney book. (i think he is just mad because he is now the lesser of the 2 steigys

Yea... I've heard several folks complain about wearing jerseys... But I rerely concern myself with things such as that. I usually ignore comments such as those, and do what I want either way. Life is too short to conform your habits to other's opinions...

**** right, thats why i wear my gray nameless numberless Pirates jersey to every game i attend and every pirates fest, and any other reason i find to put it on. I personally dont see how its any different than women all wearing vera bradley purses or guys all wearing clothes from those trendy mall stores because it has a certain brand name on it.

My vote is for the Clemente. I might consider picking that one up myself.

Thanx guys. They are both about equally priced, and I like them both, but won't get 'em both. Maybe I'll flip a coin... ...

... Almost "first pitch" time over on ESPN2.....

Avoid anything with the "pirate" logo. I've been hearing more and more that they are trying tio completely phase it out, so unless you want something updated (which isn't a bad thing neccessarily since retro is cool)

I like the optimism. It's funny. with the Pirates being so bad for so long, so many people aren't even fans and like you said, it's tough to find people to have conversations with. What makes me laugh is when I'm the goto guy for my younger brothers or some other family member etc.. on information about the Pirates. It used to be, go and find the oldest SOB in the family and they could tell you everything you wanted to know. They followed the players, followed everything in the newspaper, watched or listened to every game... It's sad but all of that has sort of changed a bit over the years. Kinda sucks that I'm the "old SOB"
