21 home runs in half a season for a career minor leaguer was a great story last year. It was a season that saw him become a Rookie of the Year candidate, but it also raised questions as to whether Garrett Jones was a fluke.
Well, after a 2 Home Run game in the opener and a 3 run home run off Clayton Kershaw in his first at bat in game 2, Jones is well on his way to proving he is in fact for real. It is amazing for a guy with his inexperience at the Major League level to make adjustments as quickly as he does, seemingly in the same at bat at times. He has never seemed overwhelmed or over matched in his short time in the Big Leagues so far. Part of the reason has to be short and powerful swing that is easily replicated and with no apparent holes. It is a swing that should keep him out of extended slumps.
If Jones can start to make the guys in the line-up around him better, this Pirates offense could turn out to be pretty good. He may never end up being a superstar, but he is already the Pirates top power threat and he is the real deal.
