    Default Roster cuts begin!

Three players outrighted off the 40 man today. All three right handed relievers, none of them good. The list so far:

    Denny Bautista
    Chris Bootcheck
    Craig Hansen

Currently the 40 man roster sits at 41 players (3 on the 60 day DL to make room for the others). There are 3 fairly highly regarded players who need to be added to the 40 man before the season begins in Brad Lincoln, Bryan Morris, and Gorkys Hernandez, plus any potential free agent signings. Still plenty of options to get rid of to make room. My candidates:

    Tyler Yates
    Virgil Vasquez
    Steve Lerud
    Luis Cruz
    Anthony Clagett
    Brian Bixler
    Phil Dumatrait
    Eric Hacker
    Jeff Sues

Probably in that order too. Sues had a really unimpressive year, but he was fresh off of winning Pirates pitcher of the year the previous season. The others kind of speak for themselves.

With the depth of arms we have...I could definitely see them pruning some guys like Vazquez, Yates, and others...I somewhat doubt Sues though.

Yeah, I put them in that order for a reason. They probably won't need all of those extra spots. They definitely need 3 spots for the minor league guys, probably at least 2 for free agents (an outfield and a reliever), then possibly a few more after. 6 is probably on the low side, and 9 is probably high, so they probably don't get to the point where they need to get rid of Sues.

The problem is that alot of those names on that list represent players who are near the top of the "depth" barrel in terms of arms next in line to get the call up. I talked earlier about how this depth is a beautiful thing for the Pirates...even if it isn't quality depth (you HAVE to start somewhere)...and I hope that we dont lose most of that depth anytime soon.

That is one sorry list of players. The Pirates would do to cut every one of them and never look back.

they are all AAA arms that couldn't hack it at the MLB level for the msot part. Those guys are had in droves every offseason and you can get lucky too. I won't doubt that Huntington stock piles back up on these types after he gets rid of them. Garrett Jones is one of those types. He's not a pitcher, but just an example

We'll probably resign some of them to minor league deals in Spring Training.

Methinks Hanson is done career-wise with the nerve damage.

    Yeah. Hensen is probably done.

Probably right that some will be signed as warm bodies and roster filler for Indianapolis but no doubt Neal will go out and sign guys for the AAA teams as well

I feel bad for Hanson. From what I have read it is a pretty freaky injury.

Yeah I feel bad as well. Look at Ascanio. Kid had some strong potential and the injury he got.... may likely screw up his career.

Though to be honest I feel worst for JVB. The guy could be making Mark Texeira money but we'll never know because DL was a moron.

Technically Hansen and Bautista are still in the system. They were outrighted to Indianapolis. Unless someone decides to take them in the Rule 5 draft they're still available to add to the 40 man (and then 25 man) at any time. Bootcheck was given that option as well, but chose free agency instead. Hansen will continue to rehab (if he reaches the point where he can actually rehab, he was told to rest it for now), and if he is able to return he'll be put back on the roster. Bautista is likely going to be a non-roster invitee to major league Spring Training next year, and then start the season in Indy. The option's still there to add him to the roster at any time assuming a 40 man spot is available.

I don't imagine that many of the players I listed before would be likely targets in the Rule 5 draft, so they could be kept in the minors as well.
