    Default Nats Will Take Harper

If they do....it saves the Bucs brass from Bucco backlash.

Nationals Plan To Draft Bryce Harper
By Tim Dierkes [April 13, 2010 at 7:56am CST]

The Nationals plan to draft Bryce Harper first overall in June "barring an injury or drastic change," writes MASN's Ben Goessling. The 17-year-old phenom, currently raking junior college pitching and playing catcher, is considered by the Nats to be "as surefire a talent as Jason Heyward" according to Goessling. Scott Boras is "advising" Harper, ensuring Harper's massive bonus will be fiercely negotiated.

Harper isn't viewed on the same level as Justin Upton or Alex Rodriguez, but there still aren't many players approaching his talent or ceiling in the upcoming draft. ESPN's Keith Law and MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo have scouting reports.

I would be happy if he was gone...it would take a lot of debate out of the pirates office that's for sure. The Nats would get a talented player...whether he's what the hype says or worth the money that Boras will want is another story, but he certainly is a talented young man.

That would mean the Pirates would have a chance on James Taillon...wonder what they would do?

If Harper is gone I'm leaning towards Machado as of today.

How about Dylan Covey or AJ Cole?

Here's a video of Cole pitching against Harper.

I would have no problem with that. The top players in the draft this year are HS players...the Pirates will have to almost accept that or overdraft. I am not sure that a college bat has emerged as even a top 5 player in the draft. Deck McGuire has probably made the top five...and if Ranaudo finishes the year out well he'll likely make the top five. But realistically the top players are Harper, Taillon, and Machado. You like the bat of Machado enough? He certainly can field...that is certainly an impressive aspect of his game.

The top 10 is just loaded with HS talent:
    1. Harper*
    2. Taillon*
    3. Machado*
    4. AJ Cole*
    5. Deck McGuire/Anthongy Ranaudo
    7. Karsten Whitson*
    8. Bryce Brentz
    9. Zack Cox
    10. Nick Castellanos*

The top 10 list above might not be completely aligned or best, but it certainly shows the top-heaviness of the draft in terms of high school talent.

I really like Taillon...but I would be more than happy with Machado.

Machado's swing needs a lot of work, but he may turn out to be a decent infielder. I also like kid named Mike Lorenzen if you could grab him in the 2nd or third round.

This is a bad year to be picking #2 if Harper goes #1.

I agree with you there...I will say, though, that he's not completely dissimilar to Beckam in my opinion...maybe even a better glove.

    $$$$$

The cost for that 2nd round pick is going to be much mroe than what they are likely worth because of what Harper is going to get.

now, if you don't get a Boras guy with the #2 pick, that would be different, but nobody wants Boras controlling the first 2 picks, he'll be jacking up the price beyond likely what the players are worth. If you choose a non Boras player at #2 chances are, you can get that pick signed and such before Boras gets Harper signed (since Boras waits to the last *** minute).

Not sure if that's the direction PFIV was oging

The #2 pick is going to cost at least 6 mil...probably more. I just don't think there is a good enough player at that spot for the that kind of money.

If I going to pay 6 mil plus at #2 I want a guy with some big upside. Machado fits that profile.

At least? Ackley signed for around $9 million last season. Boras is going to get big money for Harper. I don't know if he'll hit Strasburg loot since Strasburg was elite and Harper is more hype but there's simply no player emerging in this draft at the same level as Ackley last year and due to Harper's likely signing this year... you're looking at a money figure around what Ackley got last season for less value.
