Default B.J. PENN: PROBABLY A REMATCH IN THE WORKS

Immediate rematches haven't been a mainstay in the UFC, but fans might get just that with Frankie Edgar's first title defense coming against the fighter he defeated for the belt last weekend in Abu Dhabi, B.J. Penn.

Penn talked about the possibility of an immediate rematch with Edgar in a posting on his official website, www.BJPenn.com.

"The UFC called us yesterday and there's probably a rematch in the works with Frankie Edgar," Pen said. "Still tentative right now, but it looks like they want to do the fight again. So we'll see what's going on."

The fight was razor close throughout all five rounds, although judge Douglas Crosby somehow scored the bout 50-45 in favor of Edgar, which most pundits questioned immediately following the bout. The other scores read 49-46 and 48-47 respectively.

This is the first loss for Penn at 155lbs since a 2002 bout against Jens Pulver, which he also lost by decision. The Hawaiian had been flirting with the idea of going up to 170lbs after the fight with Edgar, but it's likely the loss will keep him at lightweight for the time being.

Another contender to the belt, Gray Maynard, has made no secret that he'd like to get the first shot at Edgar considering he's the only fighter to defeat the New Jersey born champion. In a text message sent to MMAWeekly.com on Saturday following the fight, Maynard responded, "God, I hope so! Please let that be the case!" when asked if he believed he would be getting a title shot.

Now it's up to UFC president Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva to decide who will get the first crack at Edgar's belt. With the summer cards filling up fast, it's probably not going to take long for a decision to be made.

B.J. didn't look like B.J. to me in that fight. Turns out he was getting over a serious sinus infection and had problems with his knee. Hence the knee brace. Hope he gets back to feeling better. Besides Guida, he's my favorite LW.
"He had no teeth, and he was slobbering all over himself. I'm thinking, 'You can have your money back, just get me out of here. Let me go be an accountant." I can't tell you how badly I wanted out of there." Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

LOVE guida. i will watch him any time he fights.

that fight was terrible, and i'm hoping that the rematch will be better. i knew BJ looked wrong, but hey, if you feel good enough to get in the cage, you can't make excuses, which he hasn't. he was very classy in defeat.

Very true. I don't think he was using this as an excuse either. Not that you said he did.

BJ is another favorite, but he does have the potential for ******bag behavior at times. thankfully, he was a man about losing to frankie.

Eh, IMO, most MMA fighters have some ******bag qualities in them, some more than others.

But back on topic, as much as I like BJ, I think you let some of the other guys get a chance to fight for the belt before he is allowed again.

probably not a bad idea either, but who does he take a back seat to? especially after how bad that fight was judged.
