    Default Gonchar Injured

"....There was a dark side to No. 8, however. The Penguins played the final period-plus without defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who is believed to have injured -- and possibly broken -- a hand or wrist.

Coach Dan Bylsma did not specify the nature of Gonchar's injury or offer any insight on how long he might be out, but said he expects Martin Skoula to make his Penguins debut when Florida visits Mellon Arena Friday.

If Gonchar can not play for an extended period, it would be the first major adversity the Penguins have experienced this season.

"We'd lose our best defenseman," Letang said. "He's the guy who runs the power play, plays on the [penalty-killing], plays the big minutes...."

    Exactly what we didn't need.

Well the bright side is, if this is going to happen, this is a good time for it to happen. Already have a little padding for one. Sarge will be back by the time we are in the thick of things. Gives a chance to see some other guys on the point. A look into the not so distant future of the Penguins. Do you think Gogo will get a shot at the point or go with Geno again?

Letang and Gogo I would suspect.

Gonchar is one of my favorite players and I think the leadership and playmaking ability--as well as defensive ability--that he brings to the Pens is indispensable

This could be a tough blow for the Russian Olympic team with Montreal defenseman Andrei Markov already out, now potentially Gonchar as well.

"Pens fans might be receiving some bad news concerning Pens defenseman Sergei Gonchar. The team just issued a press release saying that head coach Dan Bylsma will meet with the media this afternoon at 12:30 pm to talk about Gonchar's injury. Rarely does a team hold a press conference to say that it's a minor injury. Unconfirmed rumors are that Gonchar might have a broken wrist. "

    TSN suggests 6 weeks...

"The first wrench has been thrown into what has otherwise been a near-perfect start to the Pittsburgh Penguins' season.

Star defenceman Sergei Gonchar suffered a broken wrist during Tuesday's 5-1 win over the St. Louis Blues and could miss up to six weeks.

The injury apparently happened mid-way through the second period, when Gonchar took a hit from David Backes and immediately left the ice afterwards.

Pittsburgh head coach Dan Bylsma has scheduled a press conference for 12:30pm et on Wednesday where he will discuss Gonchar's condition.

Gonchar has been a big contributor to the club's success with eight points in nine games (2G, 6A). He is tied for second in team scoring with Sidney Crosby, and leads the team with an average of more than 24 minutes of ice time per game."

I hope they bring up Deryk Engelland...

6 weeks... while it sucks... that's slightly over a month and Gonch can be back by December. That's a hell of a lot better than Sid and Fleury's injuries the past couple years or Gonch's last season.

Absolutely sucks not having him out there but at least it's not an injury that's going to shelve him longer. At least the Power Play can't be expected to perform any worse since they're clicking around 17% which was what they were doing last eyar without Gonch.

    I'd prefer Engelland too, tocchet

It's gonna be Skoula, according to the Pens website. I'd rather see what he can do first. They kept him as our 7th Dman for a reason.

It definitely Skoula moving into the top 6 rotation. Probably Orpik-Letang, Goligoski-Eaton, and Mckee-Skoula.

The issue is whether or not they bring in someone to be the 7th dman for occasional spot duty. I hope they bring up Engelland for that role.

    Oh yeah, Doh!

In that case, I agree with you.

Yeah, it would make more sense for them to send Bourque down and bring up a 7th D man. They can rotate the 4th line if they get an injury during the game with the forwards. They do it a lot now as is.

Yup, 6 weeks. No surgery though which is a good sign.

Bourque is not likely to clear waivers and there is really no need to send him down. They have a roster spot open already and they may be able to put Gonchar on IR for 6 weeks. The Bruins just put Marc Savard on LTIR for a broken foot. He is also expected to be out for about 6 weeks. So, the Pens should be able to do the same with Gonch.

6 weeks...that blows. But we'll have him in plenty of time for the late season push. I mean a month and a half sucks...but it could be worse. Hopefully he'll be back by the middle of December.
