    Default Game 21 : Pirates vs.Brewers : 04.28.10

Haven't done this in a while, but let's go:

    1. Aki Iwamura, 2B
    2. Andy LaRoche, 3B
    3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
    4. Garrett Jones, RF
    5. Lastings Milledge, LF
    6. Jeff Clement, 1B
    7. Jason Jaramillo, C
    8. Paul Maholm, P
    9. Ronny Cedeno, SS

    Brewers:

    1. Rickie Weeks, 2B
    2. Carlos Gomez, CF
    3. Ryan Braun, LF
    4. Prince Fielder, 1B
    5. Casey McGehee, 3B
    6. Gregg Zaun, C
    7. Corey Hart, RF
    8. Alcides Escobar, SS
    9. Chris Narveson, P

Narveson is really a pretty terrible lefty. Doesn't do anything all that well. Let's get some hits.

Aki hits the second pitch for a line drive single.
Andy LaRoche comes in on fire. 12 hits in the last 4 games, 11 of them singles. LaRoche works the count a little bit and gets it full. Next pitch is hit hard into left. Line drive HR that just gets over the wall. 2-0 Pirates after 2 batters.
McCutchen works the count as well. Comes back from 0-2 to 3-2. He drives a ball way back. That's gone as well. Back to back HRs. 3-0 after 3 batters. That makes 4 HR in the last 2 innings for the Pirates.
    Jones strikes out.
Milledge gets another full count, and this time he walks.
Clement takes a couple pitches and the coach is out to the mound. Clement lines the next pitch into right for a single. Nice to see him hitting lefties these last two games. First and second 1 out now.
Jaramillo takes two borderline strikes to start the AB. He pops one up and it's the infield fly rule. Weeks makes the catch.
Maholm up to hit before he throws a pitch. 3 quick strikes and they strand the two runners.

    3-0 Pirates after 1/2 inning.

Narveson was nearing 40 pitches in the first. I think 38 was the official count.
Fielder in his career against Maholm is 3 for 33 with 10 strikeouts. That's crazy. Braun hits .381 against him, though.

Maholm gets ahead of Weeks, but he battles back full and draws a walk. Very close pitch for ball 4.
Another ball to Gomez, then he drives a ball deep. That's gone. Balls are flying out today. That quickly it's 3-2
Ryan Braun singles on the first pitch.
Here's Fielder now. Maholm is quickly behind 3-0. He's struggling with command, but he's been jobbed on a few calls. Fielder chops one over Maholm, LaRoche fields in the shift, but can't tag Braun out. He makes the throw to first for the out, and no one covers third. Oops. Braun goes to third uncontested.
Wild pitch (or maybe it was a passed ball, it hit the glove), and the runs scores. 3-3 now with 1 out.
3-0 count to McGehee now. Maholm can't throw strikes. He ends up walking him after 1 strike. This game sure turned around quickly.
Corey Hart also hits Paul Maholm very well for his career. Maholm actually throws a first pitch strike here, then gets him to bounce to the mound for an easy double play.

3-3, let's just pretend that inning didn't happen at all.

Wow, LaRoche is seeing the ball well. Five foul balls in a row...

Cedeno takes a few pitches, then pops up to first base.
Iwamura actually falls behind 0-2 and takes a called third strike. The pitch didn't even look close to being a strike. Weird call, as the ump had called a tight zone for both pitchers in the first.
LaRoche decides to make the pitcher work a little after a couple quick ABs. He's over 50 pitches now. The Brewers have a little shift on for LaRoche in the infield. He keeps fouling pitches away. Hard hit liner at the pitcher, and Narveson just manages to make the snag. I thought he had another hit there, but the pitcher made a nice quick reaction play.

...then lines out to the pitcher. None-the-less, the dude seems to be in a groove.

Gregg Zaun gets ahead in the count as well. He lines a ball into left center for a single. Before he faced Duke the other day Zaun didn't have a right handed hit all year. That's changed quite a bit now. About 95% of the league would have had a double on the ball he hit there.
Alcides Escobar flies to center for the first out.
Narveson is up for his first AB of the season. Opposing pitchers have been killing the Pirates this year, but Narveson is trying to bunt and just looks completely lost at the plate. He strikes out without touching the ball on two of his attempts.
Rickie Weeks back up again. Maholm misses low on 3 straight pitches. He can't get strikes low in the zone, and seems to be having Snell-like trouble throwing inside. Weeks ends up bouncing to Cedeno and they get the force at second.

McCutchen leads off the third inning. He gets behind 0-2, comes back to even, then strikes out on a changeup.
Garrett Jones comes up to hit. He's 3-20 on the road trip and is hitting .143 against lefties this year. Of course he's only hitting .229 against righties, so... At least he's drawn some walks. Jones goes down swinging as well. That's twice this game he's looked pretty bad.
Milledge hits a shallow fly to left center, and it's caught by Gomez.

That's back to back 1-2-3 innings for Narveson.

Gomez hits one hard to left. Milledge makes a long run towards the line and picks it up on a hop. Gomez can fly, and he just makes it into second base ahead of a tag.
Ryan Braun again now. He hits a foul ball that the ball dude makes a diving play on. Don't see that often. Drive to center and McCutchen makes the catch. Gomez tags and goes to third with one out.
Good thing Maholm owns Fielder. He bounces to the mound and Paul looks the runner back and throws to first.
Maholm falls behind 3-0 to start against McGehee. Count goes full, and Maholm gets the called third strike on the inside corner. Good job to get away with the leadoff double there.

Clement leads off the 4th for the Pirates. He's 6 for his last 12 with 2 HRs and 2 doubles. He ends up popping up here, though, and that's now 9 straight outs by Pirate hitters.
Jaramillo up to bat. He's struggle against lefties in his career. JJ fouls a few pitches off before popping up to Corey Hart.
Maholm chops one to the right side and he's out.

After the first 3 batters scored, and 5 of the first 6 reached base the last 11 Pirates have made outs. Narveson is at 79 pitches after 4 innings, and Macha said he was hoping to get 80 pitches out of him since he isn't completely stretched out. We'll see if he comes out for the 5th. It's possible they'll pinch hit for him if his spot comes up (due 4th in the inning).
