LOS ANGELES -- Pirates first baseman Garrett Jones was hospitalized late Friday night because of food that became lodged in his esophagus and would not digest. He is expected to rejoin the team here at Dodger Stadium tonight but not play in the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Manager John Russell said this afternoon that it happened shortly after the 6-2 loss Friday.

"It wasn't severe," Russell said. "It was just that he swallowed something and it wouldn't go down. You know how when there's swelling in that area and you can't get something down and need a drink? He just couldn't get it down."

Doctors did tests and gave Jones medicine, Russell said.
