    Default Game 27 : Pirates vs Cubs : 05.05.10

Pirates come in at 11-15, tied for 4th in the Central, while the Cubs are 13-14, good for 3rd in the division.

Ted Lilly brings a 4.91 ERA into the game, thanks in large part to the home run. Morton has an ERA that he's struggling to get into single digits. Lilly made 3 pretty good starts against the Pirates last year, but lost two decisions. Morton had his best and his worst start of 2009 against the Cubs with a 1 inning 10 ER effort and a complete game shutout with a career high 8 strikeouts.

The Cubs bring a bunch of very hot hitters into the game (Theriot, Fukudome, Byrd, Soto, Soriano), but their two big sluggers have struggled. A lot of right handed bats in there, which forces Soto to the bench for the day.

    Cubs:
    1. Ryan Theriot - SS
    2. Kosuke Fukudome - RF
    3. Derek Lee - 1B
    4. Marlon Byrd - CF
    5. Alfonso Soriano - LF
    6. Aramis Ramirez - 3B
    7. Mike Fontenot - 2B
    8. Koyie Hill - C
    9. Ted Lilly - LHP

    Pirates:
    1. Bobby Crosby - 2B
    2. Andy LaRoche - 3B
    3. Andrew McCutchen - CF
    4. Garrett Jones - RF
    5. Ryan Doumit - C
    6. Ryan Church - LF
    7. Steve Pearce - 1B
    8. Ronny Cedeno - SS
    9. Charlie Morton - RHP

Bobby Crosby leads off? Milledge is benched in favor of Church against a lefty? Russell just picks names out of a hat sometimes. This is Pearce's first start of the year. We'll see if his new approach carries over. Seemed to work better in AAA than it ever has before.

Morton takes the mound and the game is underway.

Ryan Theriot leads off. After taking a couple fastballs Theriot lines the third pitch, a changeup, to left. Church takes a couple steps back and makes the catch.
Fukudome (best name in the league?) gets a 2-1 count off of 3 fastballs, then flies out the other way on the fourth pitch.
Two outs for Derrek Lee. Morton starts him with an offspeed pitch for a strike, paints the outside corner with a fastball, then drops a big curve on him for the 3 pitch looking strikeout. Great sequence there for the strikeout without a swing.

Lefty Ted Lilly on for the Cubs.

Crosby inexplicably leading off here. Takes a strike, then hits the second pitch the opposite way. Fukudome charges and decides to dive at the ball. It hits off his glove, turning a single into a double. Tough decision and it didn't pay off for Fukudome.
LaRoche swings at the first pitch and pops out to second base. Lame.
McCutchen hits one on the ground towards the middle. Shortstop just misses making a play on it, which caused Crosby to hold at third even though the ball got through to center. Probably a good idea.
Jones takes that big ridiculously hard swing at the first pitch. I see him do that a lot, but never see him hit the ball with it. He's better off keeping it simple. Milledge does the same thing. He comes back from an 0-2 hole to fill it up, then rips a ball to left. It drops right in front of Fukudome. Crosby scores easily and McCutchen flies around to third.
Doumit pops up to shallow right on the first pitch. Not deep enough to score Cutch.
Ryan Church with the start against a lefty for some reason. He hits a little soft liner to the second baseman for the third out.

1-0 Pirates after one. The Pirates have outscored their opposition in the first and 9th innings this year, but have gotten destroyed in innings 2-8. We'll see how today goes.

Marlon Byrd will lead off the second. He hits the second pitch on the ground to third. Easy play for LaRoche.
Soriano now coming in having homered in 4 straight. He hits the first pitch to right for a flyout.
Morton gets ahead of the struggling Aramis Ramirez early. He ends up grounding to third where LaRoche makes a beautiful backhand play. I love watching him play third.

6 up and 6 down on 17 pitches.

Steve Pearce up first for the Buccos here. I'm actually kind of excited to see him again. Weird, right? Takes a strike, then hammers the second pitch, but it's way foul. He hit it way up over the K signs. Next pitch Ted Lilly is called for a balk for going to the mouth after coming set.. Automatic ball since there's no one on. I think that's the second bases empty balk by a Pirate opponent this year. Ends up hitting a soft liner right behind the bag at second, caught by the shortstop.
Cedeno drills one right back at the mound. It hits the pitcher and bounces to Aramis Ramirez. Cedeno's safe at first. Lilly appears to be OK, he got glove on it.
Morton doesn't waste any time and got the sacrifice down on the first pitch. Cedeno to second.
Crosby works the count full, but ends up striking out to end the inning.

    After 2 still 1-0 Pirates.

Mike Fontenot now. Morton continues to pound in strikes with the ump giving the corners to the Bucco pitcher tonight for a change. He pops up to Cedeno at short on the second pitch.
Koyie Hill takes 3 straight strikes. It's the curve that does him in again. Wow.
Morton gets ahead of Ted Lilly 1-2, then we have our first Charlie Morton Moment as he hits the pitcher in the foot with a curveball. Uh oh...Is this where the spiral starts?

Turns out it's not as he's back to throwing strikes to Theriot. Second pitch is an easy grounder to Crosby.

I think Lilly has seen the most pitches of any of the first 10 Cubs batters. 29 pitches through three for Morton, 23 of them strikes.

Yes if you are going to call Pearce up, start him. I like how Church has played, he has been a bright spot on this team. Laroche made on heckuva defesive play at third, I think he will easily adapt to going to 2nd once Pedro comes up. Holding breathe on Morton, so far so good, but he always seems to have that one inning that he falls apart. If he can get thru five, pull him and let a positive start.

Andy LaRoche will lead off here. He was pretty disappointed with his first AB, but he's still in a pretty good hot streak right now. He smokes a grounder down past third, right past the bag. It hits off the short fence in shallow left and kicks into the outfield. LaRoche in with a leadoff double.
McCutchen drills a liner towards the gap. It's rolling towards the Notch and McCutchen is flying. Soriano makes a pretty nice play to cut it off, holds him to a double. Run scores 2-0
Jones hammers a ball off the wall in right. He's in with a double, but almost pulls a Nyjer Morgan as he slides past the bag. He manages to get in safely. 3 straight doubles. Run scores 3-0
Ryan Doumit drills a ball, but it's right at Aramis Ramirez. That's 4 straight balls just smoked, but this one results an out. Bad luck on that one.
Game really slows down during Church's AB. Lilly isn't sure what's going on now. Church ends up hitting an easy pop up for the second out.
Pearce takes a couple strikes on the generous outside corner. Pulls a curveball on the ground to Ramirez. He missed it a little there. That's the third out. He really hustled down the line and was almost safe. I'd like to see a replay.

During the inning they talked about how Neal Huntington said that Pearce was "lightyears ahead" of Neil Walker in terms of maturity, and that's one thing Walker really has to work on before he can come up.

    3-0 Pirates after 3.

Another factor making this a big start for Morton: Ohlendorf is pitching right now in a AA game. He's cruised through 2, no walks, no hits, 3 strikeouts.

First pitch to Fukudome is bounced over Morton's outstretched hand, Cedeno ranges to the middle and makes the nice play.
Derek Lee lines a ball into left. First base hit of the game for the Cubs.
Ground ball through the right side and Marlon Byrd has another single. Uh oh...
Two men on for Soriano. This is where Morton has had his biggest trouble. When a guy is on second he seems to be a different pitcher. He either struggles with the new signs or tips his pitches or something.
Liner to short left for Soriano. It drops in front of Church who fires in to hold the runner. That's bases loaded with one out now.
Aramis Ramirez at the plate. Morton falls behind 2-0, then 3-1. Ramirez is late on a few pitches and fouls them to the first base side. Next pitch he golfs to right. That's a sac fly, runner also moves to third. 3-1 Pirates now, first and third two outs.
Fontenot lines a ball into left. That's another single. 3-2 Pirates now, first and second two outs.
Kerrigan out to the mound. Settle down, Charlie! This inning's been going on forever.
Grounder to second by Hill. Easy play there for the third out.

At least we're still ahead 3-2. Morton now up to 56 pitches, still not all that bad. Hopefully this doesn't snowball.

Cedeno leads off. He hits one to deep short, that for some reason Theriot doesn't come in on, giving Cedeno just enough time to beat the throw.
Morton bunts right at the plate. Throw to second for one, throw to first for two. Ball looked like it might be foul, but Hill got on it in time.
    Crosby strikes out looking.

    That inning sucked.

Not to mention Morton failed to even run to first. When have zero wins and an ERA nearing triple digits, how can you afford not to even make an effort. Walk was trying to give him a pass, but sorry, there is no excuse to not even try.

Second pitch to Ted Lilly is hit to second base. Easy groundout. The rare out by an opposing pitcher.
First pitch to Theriot is hit at Cedeno. Another quick groundout.
Fukudome decides to actually let Morton throw a few pitches. Still ends up grounding to short on the 5th pitch.

That inning was a lot like the first 3. Only 8 pitches to get three easy outs. It really is just whenever someone gets on base something goes terribly wrong. Seems like Kerrigan should have figured something out at this point.

LaRoche leads off with a hard line drive. It's right at Aramis Ramirez who makes the catch. A lot of good contact off of Lilly, but not enough runs yet.
McCutchen grounds to third. Two outs.
Jones hits a ball about 1 inch in front of the plate and is tagged out. He literally didn't move.
