Default Steelers Place WR Limas Sweed On Injured Reserve

Steelers Place WR Limas Sweed On Injured Reserve, Sign WR Isaiah Williams

To no surprise the Steelers placed wide receiver Limas Sweed on the injured reserve list on Tuesday thus ending his season. Sweed injured his Achilles last mini-camp and had surgery to repair it the following week. He was Waived/Injured on Monday and has since cleared waivers. He will now not count against the Steelers 80 man roster. To fill his place on the roster, the Steelers signed first-year wide receiver Isaiah Williams.

Steelers put Limas Sweed on injured reserve

In 1995, cornerback Rod Woodson tore an ACL during Week One. The Steelers kept a roster spot open for him all year, and he returned -- amazingly -- for the Super Bowl.

To absolutely no surprise, Limas Sweed is no Rod Woodson.

At a time when the Steelers have 80 men on the roster (and actually more, given that rookie draft picks who have yet to sign their contracts don't count), the Steelers aren't inclined to keep Sweed around in the hopes of getting him back at some point during the 2010 season, after undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon.

The team has announced that Sweed has been placed on injured reserve. He was waived/injured Monday, which exposed his contract to the other 31 teams, none of whom were willing to take him. And so he'll be unavailable to the Steelers for the entire season.

The Steelers could have placed Sweed on the Physically Unable to Perform list at the start of training camp, and the Steelers could have kept them there until Week Six, at which time the Steelers would have had a three-week window to allow him to practice -- and then three weeks to either activate him or put him on I.R.

At this point, it's unlikely that Sweed, a second-round pick in 2008, ever will play for the Steelers again. Our guess is that he'll be traded or released after the season. It's also possible that he'll be released from I.R. during the 2010 season, if/when the team believes he has recovered from the injury. The decision would then be subject to a grievance, if Sweed contends he has not recovered.

QFT. I had hopes that the guy could survive and flourish but it seems increasingly unlikely at this juncture.

I feel for the guy, I was never a fan but atleast they were going to give him another chance. He is just had some bad luck, with his personal problems at the end of last season and now this injury. He may never play in the NFL again, and then again if he recovers maybe a team will give him a look next year. Good luck Sweed with any future endeavors you try.

Why? He doesn't count against anything. How is it advantageous to simply cut him at this point?

Steelers place Sweed on reserve/injured list

The Steelers on Tuesday placed wide receiver Limas Sweed on the reserve/injured list, meaning the third-year player will miss the entire 2010 season.

Sweed, a 2008 second-round draft pick, suffered an Achilles tendon injury at the team's mini-camp May 2.

[HIGH-LIGHT]The Steelers replaced Sweed on their offseason roster by signing first-year wide receiver Isaiah Williams. Williams signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted rookie in 2009, but was released prior to the regular season.[/HIGH-LIGHT]
