This was from the Observer Reporter in Washington, Pa..... It didn't come with a pic, but I thought it was still worth posting...

WEST FINLEY – For Randy Workman’s first attempt at a wood carving he did pretty well.

Using a chain saw, Workman carved a large replica of ice hockey’s coveted Stanley Cup in the stump of a tree by his property in East Finley Township.

This past weekend he used the same saw and a torch to burn in the Pittsburgh Penguins emblem on the front of the “cup.” The team won the Stanley Cup in its 2008-2009 season.

The carving, which he did a couple of weeks ago, took him between six and eight hours because the tree is oak, a hardwood.

The tree, which was struck by lightning two or three years ago, was nearly dead and Workman worried that it would fall onto his fence and shed on Birch Road.

It actually belonged to a neighbor so he contacted her for permission to cut it down and use the wood for burning.

Workman cut the branches off and got the trunk down as far as its stump when his chain saw simply wasn’t big enough to cut through the stump. That’s when he had visions of something more.

“I just tried it and it came out pretty good,” he said of his carving.

Because he lives on a rural road, not that many people have seen the wooden Stanley Cup, though he has noticed a few vehicles driving slowly past it.

About three years ago Workman and his wife, Belinda, began attending Penguins home games and today they own half-season hockey tickets.

“During the winter it gives us something to do together,” he explained, noting that their children are getting older and leaving home.

Now he’s considering making a few more items from wood.

“I might just keep carving,” he said.

If it were a Flyers' logo, we would know who the culprit was!
