Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says he'll decide on his starting quarterback by the time training camp opens in July.

Tomlin told the team's official Web site Wednesday that he doesn't envision having a typical competition between Byron Leftwich, Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon to determine who'll be behind center while Ben Roethlisberger serves a six-game suspension to open the regular season. However, Tomlin said he'll "certainly" know the pecking order entering camp.

"Really, it's not a three-man quarterback competition at this point," Tomlin said. "We know what all three men are capable of doing. All three men, at different points in time, have benefited us and helped us win football games or played winning football. We know what we're working with. We're going to spend the rest of this offseason teaching, re-acclimating in some cases - as with Byron Leftwich - and then we're going to make decisions and move forward."

Tomlin added that "in all likelihood" he won't announce his decision at the start of camp, but he'll make it by then.

Although Roethlisberger's suspension for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy can be reduced to four games, the Steelers brought back Leftwich in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for depth. Leftwich, who was Roethlisberger's backup in 2008, has made 49 starts in seven NFL seasons.

Batch has the most starts out of the three quarterbacks with 50, but just four have come in the last eight seasons. Dixon, who's entering his third NFL season, made his first career start last year.

Report: Leftwich the favorite to QB Steelers

    May 14, 2010 - 4:15 PM ET

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Byron Leftwich is currently the favorite to begin the season as the Steelers' starting quarterback.

Schefter calls it "Leftwich's job to lose," though he may be simply reading the tea leaves after Big Byron ran with the first-team offense at the team's most recent minicamp. The situation should be completely avoided in fantasy leagues, as packages of Dennis Dixon figure to be incorporated. The more talented Dixon could also overtake Leftwich outright in camp. Look for Pittsburgh to open the year with lots of Rashard Mendenhall.

    I'm going with Dixon:
    1)Lefty/Batch are not starters.They're a good 2 game fill in,nothing more.
2)Ben is a loud fart in the wrong place away from a year suspension.
3)Tomlin has not been extended.I'm not sure how that fits in but the Steelers, with the new partners, seem to have a different dynamic about them.
4)There is only game film from 1 game,Dixon is an unknown qty.
5)Dixon is mobile and will cause DC'S to game plan for his speed

While it might make sense to give the young guy a shot and thus make it more interesting for other teams to game plan, I having a feeling MT will go with experience, and that will be a tough choice, Lefty of Batch.

Byron starts until Ben returns, and when Ben returns, Batch gets put out to pasture.

    Write it down.

The Steelers may very well opt to save a roster spot for a special-teams demon by cutting Batch before Week 1 arrives and Batch's contract then becomes guaranteed. We could go with Lefty and Dixon until Ben is activated after Week 4. If one of them were to get hurt before Week 5, we could just re-sign Batch.

I understand your point, but the only hole in that theory is - what if Byron sucks, or he gets hurt?

I'm not sure if the FO is ready to put Dixon in at starting QB just yet.

I predict Lefty starts and Dixon is the other QB that dresses on game days. If Byron sucks really badly the first couple of games, I believe the Steelers would try Dixon next and see what he can do with Lefty as the back-up.

and if Byron or Dixon got hurt, the Steelers would just immediately re-sign Batch to the veteran minimum without having to guarantee his contract for the whole season.
